Why I love my Valentine ...."1" that is.....

Well....I was minding my own bidness coming back from UC Berkeley ....cruising at about 90mph on the I5 just north Of Coalinga.....no mans land.......the only blip on the horizon was the cloud of stink above the Cattle feed lot.....

Anyhow, in my mirror I see what appears to be a black Mustang doing warp nine coming up on my buttocks......now the CHP USED to run these cars as interceptors and some of the Podunk PDs still do. The threat detector has not gone off and there has been no eye in the sky.....but I back it off anyways to about five over the 70 MPH speed limit.......

He blasts past and I see it's a civilian car....5.0 with a high and tight Marine driver.......I put my foot in it and before I can get up to speed a BMW 330 two door with all wheel drive passes me at about 110......

Woof......wind it up and hit a buck/30 and reel them in.....we play bumper tag for about 15 minutes and then my "Spidey Sense" says back off......

I tap the brakes and at the same time on the the other side I see the distinctive front end of a Crown Vic...... the Ka band warning pegs and the CHP hits the binders, locks it up, crosses the median and gives chase.......I am already in the right lane doing the 72 and he passes me without a look,,,,,,,

Phew.......

Both the Marine and the Yuppie get yanked over and I don't even look as I pass bye......

Hmmmm, time for some gas and a sandwhich......

Thank you Mr. Valentine......

Yep, a V1 is a good thing. I've only had one about 2-3 weeks and it's already possibly saved me a couple of times.

Last Saturday I headed over to Utah for a mountain bike race, its about 100 miles thru the middle of no-where. Anyway, loading up the bike & gear in the Subaru, as I walk past the 911 parked in the garage I glimpse at the VI & think.....yeah I need that too.

Twice on the trip over & once on the way back the Ka-band lit up as I was doing about 100 mph.

Thank you Mr Valentine

Me & a buddy with a black widebody were out cruising around last night. I was leading & took a left onto a 4 lane road, goosed it up to fifty (30mph limit) then backed off. My buddy, trying to catch up, got on it pretty hard as a cop crested a hill behind him (we're both loud), on the otherside of the intersection. The cop had to stop for the red light, turned on his ambers & went through the light (never turned on his blues).

Meanwhile, my buddy was going around a small corner & whipped into an alley, (probable when the cop was distracted going through the red light), then pulled into the second driveway where a guy was washing his truck. He turned off his car & got out. The guy (washing) asked him if he was lost, & he replied that he had ditched a cop & the guy laughed.

I looked in my rearview mirror & don't see my buddy, but instead a city cop flying up behind me. I was sweating the no seatbelt ticket, but knew I wasn't speeding, so I took the next right & for some reason (to his credit) he didn't follow me. I was only a few blocks from home, so I put her in the garage & called my friend. He told me what happened & I figure the cop thought I was him untill he got on my ass. Anyhow I was impressed that the cop didn't pull me over & hassle me. I will be minding my Ps & Qs for awhile around the homefront.

Talking Law 101

Better than any radar devise is to keep aware of your surroundings and part two is to know your state laws regarding violations. I’m pretty handy with my VC book (less than $10.00 at the DMV) and well worth the money. If you know the system then you can work it to your advantage….. “Should have went on to Law School”……

Good Luck!

Wow, it works as a cop detector too? I want one!

Needless to say when I embark on my long journey to the west coast I will have to buy one...

I had an awesome encounter with my 8500x50 the other day:
Driving across Washington State, which is like Kansas only a different set of mountains at the far side, about Moses Lake. I'm in the middle of a cluster of cars, and we're all doing 80, give or take 5mph (70 limit). I get a really super-short blip of Ka, but it's pegged all the way high, like someone right behind me flicked on a radar for way less than a second.

The little voice in my head flashed back: "Conn, ESM, gain new contact designated echo six, signal strength 4 Ka band. Ka band radar carried by police vehicles and automatic door openers, detection threat by platform. ... Contact echo six faded."

Now I hadn't seen any cops in a while, and I couldn't see any good hiding spots, so I held on for a moment longer. Then I heard some clicking on the scanner. Not like "clicking," but like someone keying a mike nearby. You can tell they're close when they sound really crisp -- if they're all fuzzy, it's probably a ways away. But this just _felt_ close.

It was that scene in Two Towers where Frodo and Sam are about to watch Faramir attack the caravan of Southrons -- there's no real sign of trouble, but those bird calls don't sound quite right. So I slowed to 75 and dropped back into the right hand lane. Quick review of my policy: Hmmm, getting passed by SUVs in the left lane while only 5 over the limit, I'll probably be ok.

Long time passes. Nothing Happens. Nothing on the scanner, no further hits on the radar. No more mike keys. Nothing. For like 5-10 minutes. I finally got bored and decided it was time to pick it back up to what the left lane was doing. I looked over, and there was this big light brown Suburban coming past; just wait for him, then fall in behind, right? Hmm, that's one super-clean suburban, I though. With really wide tires. And too many antennae, and heavily tinted windows. Say, what are all those big black boxes on his dash?

Maybe I better not pull out behind this guy ... Seconds later, I hear his voice (the Suburban driver) on the scanner: "I'm making the stop: the black BMW X5 for 82 in a 70, the brown Ford Aerostar for 81 in a 70." Acknowledgements came back from a total of four different voices and within a very short moment there was a swarm of stateys drifting through us.

I sailed casually through, thanks to the hint from my detector. Ah, yes, nothing so wonderful as a good ECM suite.

Dan, did you preprogram the frequencies into your scanner before you left? How many channels? Do you have it set just for WSP channels? Where did you get the numbers? What kind of scanner?

I got pulled over in Kahleeeeforneeeah last week in the 944 on the 405 in the third lane.

Female CHP with a butch newbie boy toy in training.

I was pulled over for having Nevada plates, a Nevada Driver's License, and a legal rural Nevada address. I was in uniform with hanging clothes in the back seat. On my way to visit my boat in Redondo for the weekend.

When she couldn't make that stick she wrote me for 3 MPH over the 65MPH limit. As we were going to the offramp at 68MPH, there was the usual 80+ traffic in the left two lanes, all while she had her reds on, pulling me over.

I appear on it Friday morning.

Tell them your a pilot by profession and you are meant to fly. Its not your problem if the 944 doesn't have wings.
