Deleting Center Console?

Anyone removed their console and found a nice way to finish around teh shifter? I want to install new carpet and keep my leather shift boot. Someone must have made a set-up to allow use of the shift boot. Anyone?

John

I installed a wevo shifter after I deleted my console & installed an RS carpet kit. It looks simple & clean, form following function.

I removed the console from my 85 temporarily when I was pulling out the A/C, and liked it so much without that I decided not to put it back in. Like you, I want to keep the shift boot and have been trying to think of a way to finish it off. My current thinking to to make something out of billet AL (painted/coated black) as kind of a trim ring to go around the bottom and bolt to the floor, hiding the loose end of the boot. I haven't worried too much about it since it doesn't look that bad without anything:

Chris,
We're on the same wavelength. I was thinking about some sort of trim ring to hold the boot together as well.

Have you thought about the rubber boot? As you can tell mine is not done but, I am just going to clean up the rubber boot and install the rs carpet kit.

Dude, That angelfire site sends more pop-ups than you can throw a stick at. Can you show me a pic of the polished shift housing? No Angelfire please.

Sorry about the angelfire. I have a popup blocker, but it is a funny website,

Anyhow, here is my polished housing.
Disregard my need to vacuum the carpet

Your shifter rod looks very short! Is it hard to shift that low to the floor?

Adam, Now that I look. The seats might be like three to four inches lower than stock. Makes the shifter a lot closer.

Cool, Troy. I had a friend in University/College that cut the shifter down like that on his hot-rod VW Golf and while it looked really cool, it made driving fast really hard work.

Shifter has not been cut. P.O. bought it that way. Actually, pretty easy to shift. You would be surprized. It does let you know if your shift linkage off real fast. Less throw and all. It did take me a bit of time to get the hang of it.

Go to Google and do a search under "hot rod boot ring" and there will be results for stainless and billet boot ring covers. I have been looking into this as well, but haven't measured to fit yet. I have even considered making one if I can't find one that I like. There are some promising ones at :

Hope this helps

This is a trim ring i made for my e-brake to keep the rubber from popping out from under the carpet all the time. It screws into threaded holes that were already there. The shift boot ring would probly not be as easy to make because of the different levals unless you use a boot that comes all the way down to the carpet.

Jerry,

You have more machining tools than any man should have in his garage! I'm waiting for you to appear in an episode of "Overhauling" or something tricking out a 911. Ring looks nice.

Jerry, that is a really nice idea. Would you be able to post a life-size outline drawing of that ring? Or did you just "wing it" and trim/machine as needed?

That part was made with just a drill and a jig saw out out 3/16 alum. I don't have any fancy equiptment although i did add a band saw to my arsenal. I did'nt do any drawings, i just winged it by using the general shape of the boot and filed and trimed as necessary. Now i looked back at my picture, i see the part needs to be repolished and cleaned.
