tool kit missing.....cost??

My tool kit for the 87 was in the car when I first looked at it , and subsequently dissapeared prior to picking it up. It owner swears he doesn't have it.......liar...liar.
What can I expect to pay for a complete, like new kit?

he probably has it on ebay now for $Big.00. I have seen early car tool kits as high as $700.00!

The only things you need from the original tool kit are the fan pulley spanner wrench and the flexible spark plug socket. That's just my opinion. Otherwise you can make your own kit with screwdrivers, double open-end metric wrenches, hex keys, 19mm socket wrench and whatever else you might think you need.

I agree the original toolkit is nice because everything fits nicely in the pouch. I recall seeing toolkits go for $150 easy. A friend of mine sold a few on eBay a few years back. Don't know how/where he got 'em..................

I made my own kit,I took my time and found a Porsche OEM tool pouch cheap,then I purchased the needed parts like spanner wrench and spark plug wrench,then have added conventional brand wrenches,screwdrivers etc.,I think I have less than $75.00 total invested!!! Depends on how picky you are and how much time is on your side,but buying piece meal I believe is much cheaper than buying a complete kit.

I got very lucky a few months back and got a complete kit for $54. I have no idea why it went sooo cheap, but it is 95% complete and original. I did watch for a couple of months before I got lucky, so it depends upon how patient you are.

DART Auto. Dave has a couple sets. He sold me one for my SC but I suspect it was for a Carrera as the spark plug wrench was too small. HTH The price was fair.

I always thought it would be fun to dazzle concours judges with a "replicated" tool kit..pouch sewn out of leather to match the interior, factory tools only when not replicated by snap-on...the rest snap on. Then, when judges comment, say: "Oh, you wanted to look at the lesser quality stuff that came with the car...here it is, if you insist." Carry tools I USE? An assortment of brands, mostly Craftsman. Tools for show? I still have the original kit... The funny thing? In today's crazy universe, the originals have the higher market value, despite the fact that snap on makes much higher quality tools. Craftsman, at the very least, is their equal.

An original tool kit is for the concours crowd. I've got one in my car and the only things I use are the spark plug tool, the hex that goes with it, the fan pulley wrench and the 22mm wrench for the fan nut. All the other tool are really not needed and border on the cheap side as far as quality. Did you ever check out those pliers? You really could make up a better kit with some tool from Sears.

I agree with 89911. A kit came with my '89, I spent some money at swap meets for the missing tools, making sure to get all original Hazet wrenches, basked in the glow of a complete (almost) OEM kit for a while - then realized that the tools feel clunky and, forgive me, junky. I'd much rather have a carefully put-together kit with tools of my own selection.

Hmm, we haven't had a good "what tools to carry in your car" thread for a while. I'll think out loud here and list what I'd like to have in my car instead, and how much I think they'd cost:
- metric closed/open wrenches, 10mm to 22mm ($30 for a so-so set?)
- medium adjustable wrench ($15)
- regular, and needle-nose, vise grips ($20)
- channel-lock pliers ($10)
- combination flathead/Philips large/small screwdriver ($10)
- set of Allen wrenches ($15)
- electrical wire, electrical tape, twist connectors (have it laying around)
- wire cutter/stripper ($7)
- test light/probe ($5)
- spark-plug wrench (take from kit)
- fan pulley tool (take from kit)
- extra fan belt (ditto)
- extra fuses ($5)
- DME relay (already have)
- red fuel relay (ditto)
- quart of oil (ditto)
- lug wrench (take from kit)
- flashlight ($10)
- small knife (steal from kitchen)
- a big plastic bag to lay on, a rag to clean up with
- and I always have my AAA card, cellphone, and credit card with me

Am I missing anything?
