Which performance muffler?
I'm going to be buying a performance muffler for my '87 Carrera
soon. Other than price, I'm not sure how to decide between a handful of manufactures. I'd appreciate comments/comparisons between manufactures such as Dansk, GHL, FabSpeed, and B&B. Is there a difference in terms of quality, sound, & fit between these? Any words from experience will be appreciated.

Although my experiance with the Dansk duel in/out sport exhaust is on a 914 6gt replica with an '85 3.2 motronic engine in it, personally, the sound doesn't get much better. With a low growel at idle, and an all out bloody scream at the high end, it makes me grin everytime. Great fit and quality... the only downfall is that the black coating version burns off were the exhaust comes in, and the polished stainless version turns a dull brown were the exhaust enters.

Be sure to get a stainless steel muffler - they're easier to clean up after you cook bacon and eggs on them during your morning commute...

Hi every one Ive Listened to quite a mufflers, flowmaster ,dansk, monty, ect theres just one problem as i see it they all cost to much!!!!.I recently bought a proto type SS dual in dual out from MB 911 a fellow pelicanhead. the sound and prefomance is outstanding theres no dratted drone also the sound is quite unique not too load but load enough to have fun scaring the crap out of all the honda boys. If you havent heard about it yet do a search on mb911 muffler update and oh yah the price is half as much!! as the competition.

I've followed that thread by MB 911 and that muffler looks quite interesting. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it's currently only offered in dual in dual out. I have an 87 and will need a single in and the person who posted the question also has an 87.

The Bursch muffler sure is much less expensive that most at about $250. How is the quality and longevity?

Well, the most important critereon is power. Most aftermarket mufflers harm performance. MFI systems are particularly sensitive to mufflers. I would put cost and longevity next. That obvioulsy leaves out B&B. Stainless lasts longer but costs more.
I agree the mb911 thread is interesteing and he migh make single in mufflers for you guys next - esp. if you convince him there is a market. BTW, I have a Monty dual in/out - it has some rasp (good) but the main impression is a deep throaty roar. This is listening on the engine dyno. My hope is that it will not resonate in the car (Actually, my main hope is that I get it IN the car). |

Does anyone have anything negative to say about Bursch?
I'm leaning that way or to Dansk (poll einner). Bursch seems like a great value at $300.

Monty - I put a single in/single out on my CS and I love it. Great sound with no resonance issues. And unlike the Dansk units, the tips retain the factory angle of the tailpipe so they have much more a factory look.

I have a B&B which should stand for Bland & Bad. The quality is non existent, It has required repairs 3 times already and its cracked yet again.
The outlet came loose (fractured weld) and the nice heavy tip bounced off the pavement into the hood of an M3 and into the cabin (thru the windshied). The driver was not harmed but the car and my pocket were. IMHO - stay away

MB911, its funny how they are quick to slap the little guy. Like Metallica, they were nobody till boot legged tapes made their way to the record makers.
aways, the bursch sounds good, and great performace as always from bursch. You'll get quality from them or Dansk, but if i were you, i'd listen to both before you make a decision.

Bursch is what my mechanic uses (35 + years Porsche mecahanic) and its a good product. You will not have issue's with performance or sound.
The B&B dual outlet causes in some cases compression problems. Stay with a single outlet exhaust! I loved my Bursch and will purchase another one for my 1976 911s. I believe they sale a glass-pack model , those are extremley load. The basic model has plenty of good sound. good luck jpc

Where can you buy the Dansk? Do they make the full exhaust and heat exchangers too?

My wrench just gutted my OEM muffler and, along with the cat bypass pipe, it sounds great and flows a LOT more air/exhaust. Plus, having them do it was much cheaper than buying something new, and they can "gut it " to different levels, to get some backflow reduction, but still not be too loud, or to go further.
There have been a couple of threads either here or on Rennlist regarding gutting the OEM muffler, and I can say that I'm glad that I (my shop) did it. Gave me what I wanted regarding reduced back pressure at the lowest cost. Tom
