Valance options

I'm going to post this now because everyone is awake.

I've bought a '84+ Carrera valance to replace my buggered up old stle valance. I never liked the older SC foglights... on Idahos bumpy roads they always seem to get bumped out of whack.

So, now that I've sent Terry the cashola for the valance... should I "A", start looking for a set of flush fog lights to put in the holes?
Or "B", modify them to run ducting to brakes or oil cooler?

Opinions? Photos??

Say's he can't find a part number though... would probably be woth investigating though!

Leland, first off, thanks for the job you are doing, and glad to hear you're coming back soon.

Second, where do you live/stationed normally? This would make a difference to me. If you are in a hot climate and do any DE work then use the pass side for getting air to the cooler. (I'm in HOusTon so that's what I've done), but if the weather is not that bad where you normally lay your hat then get the lights, they look nice. Personally for me they don't really do much I would have preferred driving lights, but they look good.

Wether or not you need the extra driving / fog lights depends on where you live. Here in So Cal, I simply didn't need them and took them off. My headlights provide sufficient light at night. I will be using the front valance for brake ducting / oil cooler air inlets.

Why did you buy a new valance? Was your old one smashed. I just plan on cutting holes in my 78SC valance and fabricating air ducts as you see in the RS spoiler.

There's an add in 911 and Porsche world, or possible Excellence, with that air scoop that you can replace one turn signal lens with. Has anyone tried that? results? Seems off the bat like the best of both worlds.

I didn't like the look of the fogs, so I removed them. If you decide to go without the lights, don't cut the brackets away that hold the lights. Removal of the brackets makes the valance kinda flimsy. That is, when it's not fastened to the car. If you install it, it'd be a little stiffer. Paint the brackets black so they dont stand out (mine are red and look silly in there). Might be able to see them on my signature page below. I plan to put some screening on there for the time being until I move onto the Bill Verburg, RUF-style bumperage.

Leland, When I repainted my SC last year,I changed the valance to the Carrera type with recessed fogs, I liked the look better than the SC valance with the outside fogs. My thought also was if I decided to add a brake colling system,I could remove the fogs &use the cutouts for brake ducts. The SC winshield washer tank will not work with the recessed fog lights. The tank has to be updated to the Carerra Type. When I add the front Carrera Type oil Cooler I am planning to notch the underside of the bumper for increased flow to the cooler. Craig

Thanks for the tips guys... I didn't know that the washer tank interfered with the fog lights... see...what would I do without this board!

I do live in a very hot climate... (South west Idaho) so i think it would be benificial to have the openings. I had planned on cutting the brackets out and putting some trim around the edge to make it look a little more finished.
My old valance is slightly boogered up and I just don't like those pesky SC fog lights getting bumped out of whack constantly.

And I got a Carrera valance for $80.

Again, thanks for the info guys!

Send a message via AIM to 82SC
when I was thinking about RUF valance Ithought of this...

I think it would be pretty easy...

Make for light buckets behind the openings...(don't know if they come with it) then at the back of the bucket drill a huge hole and add brake ducting...feed wires thru a small hole...add quick connects between the wires and the for light...

that way at the track you can unscreww the fogs from the bucket...snap the wires off...voila...brake ducting...

also get yellow lens...they look cooler

Man, I should read this board more. I just found this out the hard way when I tried to install a carrera valance on the SC. I did some "hacksaw engineering" since I don't care for foglights and the holes are just for cooling. In other words, if you cut out the foglight support from the Carrera 3.2 valance you can clear anything the SC valance does. If I had known this was going to happen I would have just bought a plain valance and cut holes to suit. I didn't want to cut my original SC valance because it has nice paint and chip protection film (that was a bastard to put on), and I want to see how the cooling works out.

I did get a front spoiler out of the deal with the carrera valance (thanks geof33) and I like the way it looks on the car.

I've always found the fog lights to be useless, venting for the oil or brakes however is priceless.

To vent you will need to relocate the waterbottle, another uselesss addition to theses cars.

Help: I'm getting ready to update mine and I'm confused. Do I need to relocate the bottle for the valence to fit or just if I need to run ducts for the brakes? I like the look of the update valence and am in the process of getting it painted white to match my car. The old one is banged up pretty bad and the fog lights were shot so the update really works well for me. Now I'm wondering what I have to do about the water bottle?

mtelliot, for the basic valance swap (no cooling) you have to get a carrera washer fluid reservoir to relplace your SC one. I hacked around with mine to make it fit with the SC reservoir (for now) but I couldn't put a foglight in if I wanted to (I don't). so you really have to swap that reservoir, or eliminate or move it.

Oh ok, I thought you had just trimmed those holes but you actually put duct "funnels" in there. How is your oil cooling?

very good cooling without a fan even. it did take some heating and bending of the inlets to get them to sit flat on the convex portion of the valence. i just did one at a time, using an epoxy and C-clamps. then i used 2" ABS plumbing waste pipe and a 22.5 degree fitting to direct the inducted air right into the radiators wheel house.

i have done nothing really with the drives side except more abs and a coupler fitting. i used the pipe pressed into the fittings (on both sides) to retain some 1/4 galvanized screen to prevent debris (bugs/rocks) from entering and clogging the radiator.

i figured cooling one side of the brakes was worse than two hot brakes, although i have never had a brake overheating issue

you're referring to the windshield washer bottle, right Bill? This can be quite useful if you're driving on sloppy roads, perhaps most people here don't. However, the size that these cars have is totally unnecessary, a small one would do fine. I saw your post elsewhere on the 964RS washer bottle, looks like a very nice option. We can put "964RS washer bottle" right next to "turbo tie rods" on our "mods list" Do you also need to remove the fuel evaporator tank for brake cooling?

No, the washer bottle is huge, ~2gal! , the 964RS setup is a good option, no other changes are needed to run ducts.

I don't use the 911 or my bike when the weather is bad, that's what Audis are for.
