Collapsable Spare with Fuchs
Is there a way to marry a collapsable spare with a ( ?) 6 x15 Fuchs.... I know it exists.
I'm thinking of dressing up the trunk of my 85 that uses a steel wheel......how does one do that? --Wil ![]() |

I bought a fifth 6" Fuchs for the 914, for reasons such as this (thinkin' about goin to a nine incher though). Seems to me I saw such a setup in an old 916 photo and it did look sharp. It was mounted against the front trunk firewall rather than the floor.

I've got one. I had to give up my mint original full size spare with original tire to get it though. But I went to the larger tank, and had to have it.
I'm glad I did though, since it will go nicely with a future RSR or ST replica.

BTW, it's been done before by cutting the steel rim from inside the collapsible tire without damaging it. Then mounting it on the 15X6.

Tyson,
I wasn't aware the tire had to be removed in this manner (cut wheel). How was it originally installed on the steel wheel? I heard it wasn't an everyday swap. Is this why? Sherwood |

You can remove a space saver tire from a rim (steel or alloy) I have done it many times. The hard part is having it off the bead, inside the rim. Then you have to be careful pulling oit off the rim, as it is rather soft in the bead area.
It will *not* work on a deep six, or any tube type rim, unless you have a bead welded to the rim (in the front part at least). The tire will fall into the smaller part of the rim, and you can't inflate it. |

I guess the question then becomes:
- how hard is it to remove the collapsible tire from the steel rim, and mount on a Fuchs ( is the Fuchs 6x15 correct?)...also, with "what" special procedure for doing this ?? ---Wil

Will,
The tire can be removed as any tire, but with some care, and some strength. The paddle that takes the tire "off" the bead to the inside of the rim has a tendency to slip off, as the tire's flanks are not there (folded). Use TONS of tire soap. Go to the tire shop with 2 beers, sit down with the shop owner, and talk the deal over with him, asking him to be bale to assist. It takes some grunting. The beaded 6X15 is the only Fuchs that goes well unmodofied. You can use 7X15, but it doesn't make sense. |

It looks like the factory did it. (photo from Porsche 911 '71-'77, Brian Long).
I'm taking my 'extra' 6x16 Fuch to the tire shop tomorrow to mount a spacesaver on it (using a 993 16' spacesaver), I'll post the results. ![]()

I never thought of the 16" space saver option ( from 993)....married to a 6x16 Fuchs....another way to go !

Short versio<:
It was mounted and fits with no problems. Long version: It depends on the dealer. I went to our local 'Les Schwab' (tire chain it the pacific northwest) which in the past had always handled my weird requests (40 inch Unimog tires with bullet holes, AG tires for my Rokon, etc) along with normal tire stuff with no problems and great service. Well the manager must have changed. I had 6 Fuchs (4 for my 911 needing new tires mount that I had, 1 spare mounting for my 912, and the spacesaver mounting). The 'worker' said that the only thing they could do with a spacesaver was put air in it for me (wow, my mom can even do that), and then the manager told me that they could not work on "Porsche" wheels because they were "special". I agreeded that our Porsches are "special" but the Fuchs are like any other aluminum rim. Nope we can't work on "those special rims". Well no more Unimog tires with bullet holes for you guys. So off to the local non-chain tire shop. And the way it should be, "not problem, have them all done while you wait". No problem with "Porsche" rims, we are careful with all rims, including aluminum rims. No problem with your spacesaver, they can be tough, but a heck of a lot easier the 30 profile tires on 30+" rims that are $2000 each. The spacesaver did take 2 guys to get it mounted, it was kind of hard getting it to drop into the recess, but nothing crazy. I would recommend a rim in the 4.5"-5.0 inch range (15 inch rims), my 6x16 is a little wide , but still very workable. Good luck. P.S. the 16" fits in my gas tank divot with no problem. Deflated

Resurrectung this thread to ask the specific question.....
Will a 16" space saver tire ( say from a 993)...combined with a 6 x 16 Fuchs wheel...fit the small opening "divot" of an 85 Carrera tank ( 22.5 gallon size)? Me thinks Unimog says it does work...but I wanted to be vey clear on this, also with the tank size. I presume he meant it fits his 87 with the same gas tank size as mine. -Wil
