Voltage Regulator & Alternator Match?

This is a '73E.

I made the mistake of accepting a rebuilt alternator off the shelf at the local rebuild shop instead of having what appeared to be the original Marchal rebuilt. It was obviously not working because blown diodes were visible.

My first problem was that the plastic air deflector cone would not fit because the heat sink plate was all wrong. I ground that down to fit and installed it. No problem.

Except that now the Generator light stays on. With the excellent advice I found on this board (thank you Warren), I did some troubleshooting and believe that the voltage regulator is faulty. (Resistance tests showed no corrosion or connector problems. At about 1500-2k rpm I was getting a steady 8 volt DC reading on the black wire disconnected at the voltage regulator. The AC reading was unstable.)

I was about to order a new voltage regulator when I came across this:

Do I need to find an SEV Motorola voltage regulator? Are these even available? Why won't any voltage regulator work?

TIA,

Cab

Audio:

I disassembled the Marchal mechanical regulator from my car and found that it worked fine. The problem turned out to be a bad diode in the rebuilt unit I had bought. With that fixed, all is fine with the rebuilt Motorola unit and Marchal mech regulator.

All this means that I have an electronic unit I bought for about $15 if you want it. I have no use for it and don't believe I can return it to Autozone where I bought it. Let me know if you want it.
