Air Intake for Carrera 3.2
I know couple of guys have put lots of info on the forum about the usefulness of a 'cool' air intake, even tbiz put some data abt the intake air, etc.
A couple of day ago, I went to my local hardware store and bought a foot length of aluminium semi rigid 4" pipe. I slotted one end into the intake tube and routed the other end to sit up below the right side of the Carrera tail. As the pipe is semi rigid, all that is holding the pipe to the intake is a simple 4" clamp. It cost me abt 5 bucks in all. Don't think there much performance diff, but I have noticed that my oil temp do not go much over the 90C mark nowadays even with aircon on and in traffic. On the move, the temp is usually below the mark. The ambient temps here are in the 27C to 33C. Its rains here often and it seems ok. The pipe has enough slack in it so that water can still dribble out from the end. And since the stock air intake is in place, it would take lots of water before any can get over the lower 'lip' of the air intake. Dont have a digital cam but used my phone cam to snap these pixs. One of the regulars on this board did the same thing, but using pvc pipe. You might want to do a search and take a look at his.

I'd be curious to see the temps, at the filter, with and without this mod.
I would'nt be surprised if the stock setup is cooler.

Assuming the engine fan is working while you are driving and massive amounts of air are being sucked into the engine compartment, there would be no reason to believe that the air in the engine compartment has stagnated to the point of heating the surrounding air.
Before jumping to conclusions as to how hot it becomes at your intake, place a thermometer at your filter intake, your efforts might just be an excercise in futility. Besides, when the engine lid is closed, the intake horn is already within inches of the grill and engine fan, so hot air would be the least of my worries. Cheers, Joe |
