Making your own A/C hose....

I have been going over what's involved in getting the A/C to work on my A/C and have looked at the cost of replacment lines..

There's gotta be a way to find some hose that can handle the pressures of A/C systems...

What I'd like to do is find some, cut it to length, then cut the fittings off the old hose, clamp them onto the new hose..

Anyone know what properties the hose has to have, and where I might find some?

Jared try calling a hose shop and they will be a great resource. There is a nice small shop called Mesa Hose off 17th in Costa Mesa, bring in the old hoses and clamps and they will recreate them with new hoses and possibly new clamps/fitttings.

That's usually what I do, I just bring in some sample hose and buy it in bulk and make my own replacements at home.

ackits.com (at the link above) will make an entire set of new barrier a/c lines with new aluminum (won't rust) fittings for ~$120 including shipping! They also throw in a complete set of O-rings and compressor oil.

For that price I didn't think it was worth the hassle...

That is pretty good. Do you have to give them all the dimensions and sizes, or do they already have them for the 911?

Jared,

AcKits is the best I have found in years. What I did was to take them the old fittings and they reused them on new hose.

They left one end off so I could snake the new hose around in the car and then had it crimped after the hose was in place. As long as they have a fair amound of room they can crimp one end on with no problem.

They also have a very good forum for A/C questions or just call them directly and they have been very good in helping.

Regular crimping dies (as used for hydraulic lines or fuel lines) will overcrimp A/C fitting ferrules and cut into the hose possibly resulting in leaks. Jim

Don't a/c hoses have teeny tiny little holes so that if pressure builds up the hose does not burst? Somene told me thats one reason why you lose refrigerant over time.

I sent them all of my old hoses, and they sent me new replacements. I didn't find that having the fittings already on the hoses made running them any more difficult.

They may have the dimensions already... If you can find someone that has already had theirs done, they should be able to pull up the invoice to get all of the sizes and fitting information. You're welcome to use mine, but it's from a Carrera with O-ring fittings. If you think it will work for you, send me an email or PM and I'll send you my information.

JohnC,

The old hoses, for freon were as you describe. The new hoses required for the new refrigerants are "barrier hoses" which are not porous and do not leak.

If one has to pass an A/C hose into the engine compartment up through that slot ahead of the shock tower not having a fitting on the end of the hose is a real advantage.
