Exhaust design
The wonderful topic of exhaust! I need some opinions... I have read some of the longer treads on mufflers and have decided to go with a Dynomax Ultra Flo muffler. For cost (mainly) and sound.
'74 2.7 w/headers My question is this, is it better to go with a system that collects the exhaust before the muffler, IE a single inlet muffler with a collector before the muffler, or a dual inlet muffler that would bring the exhaust down to a single outlet. The car is setup for a single exhaust pipe and I don't plan on going dual unless there are some reasonable options for a new rear valance. Here are the two mufflers I am considering: 17283 17519 What do you think? |

No opinions? Someone at least rag on me for using non-German parts!

I am using a Dynomax on my 3.6. I love it! The sound is beautiful, not obnoxious like so many aftermarket mufflers.

I have a Bursh system off of my 3.0 with back dated heat exchangers from an erly 70's 911. It's a dual inlet, single outlet muffler in very good condition, could even polish it for you like Mikez said. Could measure up and compare with yours to see if it would fit. Let me know if you're interested.

How much are you asking for JUST the muffler?

Looking to get around $150 for it. I only had it on the car for a few months and then forked over for a B&B system with a catalyst.

Porsche_911s, refresh my memory: doesn't the 2.7 exhaust have a crossover pipe leading to a single outlet to the muffler? If that's the case, it seems like it would mean a lot of aggravation to run a second pipe from the leading edge of the motor all the way back to the muffler.
I'd stick with a single-inlet. I have a Flowmaster, which I like a lot.

The '74 2.7 does not have a crossover pipe. I currently have an OEM style on there right now. The headers connect directly to the muffler.
![]() Of course this is not my actual muffler, just a pic. |

The exhaust measure 25" from center pipe to center pipe. It's a two bolt flange and measures 3" inches from center bolt to center bolt.

'74 used the old style copied and improved by SSI.
Just get a Dansk or Monty oem twin in style. Personally I like the 2 out but it will likely be louder.

Here's another version that is street legal
![]() Talk to Steve Weiner at RennSport Sytems about this one. I don't know how effective these are on a flat 6. On a V8 they are very effective because of the uneven firing pulses that always exist on one bank of cyliders(on street V8s).

I'm currently making a custom exhaust for my Porsche powered VW Crewcab. I was using Supertrapps w/9 disks and internal mods. I switched over to a pair of Jones Exhaust mufflers. They are 12" long (available in 12"-24" length) 2" in/out, 4" diameter, and weigh 8lbs. ea. I used the "turbo" model. It's as loud as the Supertrapp I removed. I'm fabing up some Ansa tips to bring the noise down a little more. I have a pair of 18" mufflers I'm going to try on our 2.8 twin plug race motor.
The best part is the mufflers are $18 ea. I would try the "super tubes" for the race car. Worth a look. http://www.jonesexhaust.com

The blue header and exhaust setup on the Yellow car is just not right. 'Cause it should be on my car! Woodie, woodie, woodie.

If you've got the old-style headers/exchangers, then I think the low-cost answer is to get a dual in, single out muffler (like a Flowmaster), but with an inlet on each side (like a Camaro muffler from the late 80's?).
