@ steve

how did you get this color from the glasurit site, I have tried every type of search and it keeps telling me there is no listing for this code.
I have since found another sticker under the carpet in the trunk with the same code and the name Montegoschwarz - Met. I can't find reference to this colour in any chart on any site but now I'm convinced its a black of some description ( schwarz )

Garage
The Glasurit website shows the 717 color as 1984-89 - his is a 1981...

If you look at this 944 website under 1984 & 1985, it looks greenish:

OK guys, here's the next question. The paint code on the official badge both on the door pillar and the sticker in the trunk are the the same Montegoschwtrz Metallic. This color looks like black metallic in daylight but at night when a light is shone at it ,it looks a brownish metallic. On the original factory documentation for my car it gives the color as 000060. Nobody seems to have a cross reference for this color. I have asked porsche and they can't (or won't ) tell me ??

Hmmm. My BASF color database says that Montegoschwrtz Metallic is a 924/944 color from roughly the same year (83 on) that references code LY9V but as posted above, code 717 registers "Graphite Metallic" in the Glasso database. Both colors are not the same just looking at the formula. But "Graphite Metallic" also registers as code LB7V (also a VW color) and seems to be a metallic black of some sort. Both colors are based on a black metallic. I don't have the rest of my documentation with me. I'll cross reference this in the factory paint manuals and repost if I see anything more interesting ...

The majority of the color starts with high strength black but, I'm guessing from the amount of red, blue and aluminum (without mixing some up) that its a reddish or purple-ish tinted dark gray color??

Thanks for all the info guys, its exactly as you say, jet black in daylight and browny/red at night. What was confusing me was the fact that this color was as you said 924/944. My car was the prototype and the first slantnose made by special wishes program and anything was possible back then. I still can't find any reference to the factory color on the original documentation 000060. Maybe someday !

Not that it's the bible but the US factory paint manual doesn't reference Montegoschwrtz Metallic anywhere for 911s. But again, it does come up under 944. In that case I'd guess the correct code is LY9V - Montego Black Metallic. Also you might want to varify the last character since there is both an LY9V and an LY9Y both can look the same on faded paint stickers. The later (LY9Y) is Satin Black Metallic so that could make things more confusing. Sounds like the car is in good condition so I'll assume the original codes are easily discernable.

Porsche's docs obviously aren't perfect. What is actually hysterical is the fact that under "paint data plates" there is a section where they show a car of each model type with an example of where to find the paint plates. On both the example of the 89' C4 and an 89' 928 both cars show a tag labeled "717/9/3 Montegoschwarz Metallic". There is no reference for that paint code ever being available for either model !!
