9.5" X 17" Fuchs in my SC? (HELP!)

I love my polished Fuchs, but want to go to 17's. I don't want 3 piece wheels, so the Lindsey Racing weld-ups seem perfect. I talked to Dave Lindsey today and he told me that Jack Olsen got the last set of 9's and now he can only get 8 or 9.5" barrels. He also told me that the 9.5 X 17's will not fit in the rear of my SC without moving oil lines.

So I did a search and it appears that some others might have made them fit. (Mark Wilson and a few others). Any idea why Lindsey would tell me they won't fit? If they DO fit, what offset do I need and what tire size should I look for?

THANKS!!!

Moses:

I've only mocked it up at this point and its on a 72 so my oil line position is likely a different scenario. I've got a 10" rim with 265 going in there. Do lots of boring searches and you'll find several running 9.5 to 10" rims back there. It is going to be "close" and he therefore probably doesn't want the responsibility of business owner to lead wrong.

Here is a quote from somone already doing it. I'm not going to post his name since I don't want his words to be held in question if others have problems.

"Luke: Thanks acording with the pay bill I have:
18x8 ET30, 144.5 Back spacing, 30.2 Factor X (don`t know what is Factor X) front on 225/40R18
18x10 ET21, 161 Back spacing, 5.96 Factor X rear on 255/35R18
I did´t shave the bolts but I shave the flare inner edge and I´m running a setrab oil cooler so the lines are aftermacket Elephant racing."

I'm going with a little less BS than he did, but it probably will depend on the tires you choose and willingness to make alterations. If you have $10g paint job and don't want to move the oil lines, I might steer clear.

Mark Wilson and I are using 2 piece 9.5" X 16" Fuchs. Only one tire brand offering anything bigger than 245s in 16".

We are both running 245 x 16 in back.

I have a set of Fiske 9 x 17" as well. They were rubbing on a standard Carrera they came off of and justy barely clear my car with much stiffer suspension with SO3s in 255/40/17. The oil lines are clear on both but the outside rear fender, passenger side does not clear anything bigger than a 255/17. With the right offset the 9.5 will clear the fender and oil lines I believe.

I've used 9x17's w/275 Hoosiers on our '73 Targa w/factory RS flares. I moved the oil lines down to where the body starts to angle back, about an in. or so. I strapped the loose U shaped rubber line back. The minimum backspacing was 5.5". The 9x17" (HRE) have a 6" backspacing. I kept spacing them out until they quit rubbing. I'm currently using 255/40/17 S0 3's which are about 1" narrower than the Hoosier. The rear camber is 2.8 d.

9X17's fit easily on an SC. Many can attest to that. I don't recall the exact offset but I think it's 19mm. I have a 255 Kumho's and there's plenty of room for a wider tire. I suspect a 9.5" would fit easily.

I've seen up close and personal someone who has 10x18 Fikse's on their Carrera. I don't know offset but I think it's Fikse's standard 10" 911 rear offset but we had to add a 6mm spacer to make it clear the alignment bolts. The car has rolled fenders and we had to massage the fender a bit (perhaps 1-2mm) and it works. It's had Hoosiers and Michelin ont his set up.

I also have Linsey's 17x8,9.5. Im running 245-40 and 275-40 Victoracers. I dont have any clearence problems. 73 tub with SC trailing arms. Lots of negetive camber as well. Tyson Shmidt had 10 on the rear and they rubbed alittle. Also rubbed on the oil lines. 9.5 is the best bet IMO.

Joe - do you have or can you take a front and rear shot of your car so we can see what the negative camber looks like?

P.S. - you hung over?

Will Lindsey's 17x8,9.5 Fuchs fit over big brake calipers on the front? I have 928S4 calipers on the front and the 16X8 951 fuchs barely fit over them with a 1/4" spacer.

Yes to the second Question. Let me go and get a battery for my camera later today and I will post them for you. It doesn't even look like that anymore with - camber cranked in. Tyson Schmidt did the suspension on the rear and said that we have plenty of room for the elephant lines that have not been installed yet.

Joe- Do you know what offset Dave Lindsey used or you just told him what car you had and went with specs he had. I want the same rims you got, they look the best on the early cars IMO. I have the same flares as you but had e-mailed Bill Verburg and he said anything over 9" requires work and could be trouble. Mike P

Kevin Stewart, the Carrera I fit them on looked just like my SC as far as control arms, and spring plate mounting hardware. How are they different?

I really wish that some of you guys claiming 9.5" and 10" wheels would post some measurements of o/s, width, front space and backspace. any 2 would do.

My car has +19mm 9.5x17 w/ 275/40 tires(11x25.7") The oil line was moved, the trailing arm bolts shaved, the lips shaved and the flares were recontoured. There is <.25" space on either side of the tire, no rubbing, no excessive camber(performance street alignment)

Skinnerd has kindly provided the best 10" data(actually no one else has bothered) Fikse 10.0 e/e 11.3" e/e 285.75mm o/s 18.6mm f/s 4.88" f/s 123.825mm b/s 6.375" b/s 161.925mm 5/16" spacer for SC/Carrera rear flare spacer 7.9375mm net o/s 10.6625mm

From what I understand, the Lindsey wheels use a 6x16" Fuchs for the donor. The centers on a 6x16 have no where near the caliper overhang clearance of the 8x16 951 Fuchs, so I would say NO, they will not fit over your S4 brakes without bigger spacers than you are using.

On the front of my car, I had to use 1/8 inch spacers to get clearance for 930 calipers with 17-inch wheels made with 6x16 centers.

The limitation is built into the center of the wheel's design (relative position of the paddles to the mounting surface of the wheel). But it doesn't even require changing out the lug studs.

My question is really the back. Need to figure out if I can stuff 9.5X17s in there. What's your guess, Jack?

My wheels are also made from 6" Fuchs and I used 7mm spacers to clear the unshaved 930 brakes front and back. You still get a full 8 rotations on the lug nuts.
