Need advice for getting some tail
for the car that is..
Below is a picture of the tail as well as a pic of the front of my car. The tail is from a '69 911 and I have an '86. My questions are: 1. Will it fit? 2. How easy is it to swap them out for street/track use? 3. Do I need a different spoiler for the front? 4. Anything else I should consider? ![]() ![]() Thanks,

Thats an early turbo tail, f/g which unites the deck and tail as one w/ a separate rubber lip only on factory versions, aftermarket also incorporate the lip in the single piece
main dowside is that it is 1 large piece and therefore heavy and hard to fit. You would want a matching front spoiler for your valance, SC rubber lip type or better. I would suggest a later Carrera or RS America style which will be a separate piece that bolts on to a stock steel or Aluminum lid. Factory versions will be heavier and have separate rubber or p/u lips, better aftermarkets wil be a single lightweight piece. These smaller bolt ons are easier to fit and finish. Again a matching chin spoiler(or better) is desired.

Hi Ross,
Curious as to why you'd consider an early tail vs Carrera. Is it due to the Carrera's larger size, therefore more weight or simply cosmetics? I scoped out an early tail for my targa recently but decided to go with a duck when I have the funds. I've attached a couple of pics of my wife's '87 with a Carrera tail for comparison.

My questions are:
1. Will it fit? Sure, anything from '65-'89 will fit 2. How easy is it to swap them out for street/track use? I defer to Bill's greater knowledge on this except to say, "just leave it on" 3. Do I need a different spoiler for the front? You currently don't actually have a front spoiler, you only have a valance, and yes, as Bill said, you would need to add a spoiler. As he said, the rubber lip will be fine. 4. Anything else I should consider? The "Whale Tail" (what you have pictured) also known as the early turbo tail, IROC tail, Carrera 3.0 tail (all basically the same design, size and number of vents may differ) and the Carrera tail are my two favorites. Duck is a favorite some days, or a close second others. Turbo is great if you have a turbo. Just in case you didn't already know, that tail was used in various forms from '74 - ~80 (Bill, your old all rubber tail was the same basic design, wasn't it), so it's an add on to the '69, not original.

I have a carrera grilled fiberglass tail with a factory rubber turbo-lip for sale. It's red, with one maybe two chips on the edge.
It's in my attic... I wanted to put it on and see what the differences, if any, are during "commuting". But I haven't the money to spend on painting it. PM if you're interested.

I bought a ducktail, and just swap out the whole lid for track days. I picked up an extra grill and plunger, so it is 4 bolts to do the swap. Since the AC is gone, it is quick and easy. I leave the front rubber spoiler on all the time.
From the plots I recall seeing, going from no tail to a ducktail makes a huge improvement. You get a bit better advantage from a Carrera tail over a duck, but I like the looks of the duck better. |
