Lightbulb Heater - 993 engine in SC backdate - a BTDT FYI

Used in the SC with 3.6 Varioram:

RSR tube off of engine shroud
No heater fan
964 under-engine stainless splitter tube
All heater boxes functional and open for heat

I just assembled & correctly installed this system myself -

Barely any heat at all, even at 4k rpm.
I will install a SPAL 4" fan under the engine sheet tin to assist in air blowage. I am fogging up & freezing -

It appears the stock 993 air diverter below the shroud cap doesn't divert much air to the backdated system.

Plan on a fan if you are doing this conversion.
I'd like to hear of other experiences with this type of setup!

THX

Got the same thing - except...

I have 964 Heater Boxes. Heat is EXCELLENT. I never have the levers above half "throttle", and I have not even enabled my footwell blowers.

Data Point: I have the 964 Fan Shroud and heater pipe adapter (you must have the same thing, as the Thom Tube requires it)

Not perfect though, as the pic shows - my oil line was not going to budge!

I am installing the 993 Heater Distribution tube and 993 heater boxes with a Timmins/McNeil "happy crab" dual outlet muffler in the next few weeks, so I will be closer to your current setup.

Perhaps this is the B&B Headers heater box construction? From the pics I have seen, the boxes look rather small compared to stock. In this case more airflow would make things worse!

Chris

My car has Carrera kick panel blowers, to pull air forward. TRE Motrsports wired it so that my rear defrost switch (Lexan window) is now a two-speed control for the blowers.

I think it makes more sense to put the fans forward, for weight distribution if nothing else, rather than back by the engine.

I have factory 993 heat exchangers with the factory 993 cast aluminum tube and Thom's RS carbon heater tube, heat is great. This is on a 964 engine.
Could it be the B&B's, the factory heat exchangers are packed with stainless steel mesh.

My deal here is the heat that I *can* get to come out at higer rpms is HOT. I just need some volume perhaps?

I do have the B&B tiny heater boxes...

It is easy to install a fan out back, much harder for 2 fans up front.
I'll give the 1 lb SPAL a try under the tin and see how it works.

Even a modest breeze as with the 3.0 SSIs and fan off would make me warmer.

My vote for the culprit is the B&Bs, I had great heat when I had SSIs and 964 engine w/ fan, little heat w/ B&B from either 964 w/fan or 993 w/o

Great. B&B strikes again.

Mine works great with a blower up front. (It's easier to pull a length of rope than to push one.)

Oh. At this stage even rope would keep me warmer.

It's a pair of blowers, actually. And in fairness, 'great' heat in California might not be as impressive in colder parts of the country.

Still, I'm happy with the setup.

I deleted my heater blower last summer, but trashed my car before it was cool enough to need heat. A few weeks ago, on a cool night, a buddy took me for a ride in his 993 C2S with heater blower removed and super charger installed. Car was very warm inside. Without the blower you'll get no heat at idle, but should once you're moving. Not sure about defrost.

With my 2.7L and SSI's, I could melt my tennies. The little plastic outlets up under the dash were seriously deformed from the amount of heat. To call the B&B 'adequate' for NorCal winters is being generous.

Compare the B&B to stock heat exchangers or SSI's and the first 2 things you'll notice are a smaller amount of exhaust pipe containted within the shell, and the shell is nowhere near as tight around the exhaust pipe. Therefore not as much exhaust surface area to pick up heat, and a loss of air pressure out the edges of the heater boxes.

Yup.
My ex-SSIs were scorching hot with no fan on.

Time to do some inventing here -

TRE Motorsports did mine. But it wasn't complicated. I have Thom's tube, and the 964 piece between that and the heat exchangers. I modified the tube to fit around my engine tin, but the seal is not great where the CF tube meets the 964 piece. The advantage of the kick panel fans is that if there's a hole in the system, you pull cool air into it rather than pushing hot air out of it.

How would the Spal fan work under the engine tin? Will a 964 or 993 blower motor fit in the engine compartment. I have a similar problem with my conversion - the heat is far from par. I am running Instant G's McNeil muffler/header set up with Thom's CF Tube and want to try to get air forced upfront so I can enjoy the car during the winter!

Also, how do the kick panel blowers work - do SC's already have them? Where are they located?
