I know the guy making and selling them. He's a first class p-mechanic who has a little tuner side. He's got some trick carbon fiber and aluminum on his 600hp 930.

I admit it - I bought one. For a lot less than $169.
Its on the way - and it WILL be a clue to additional LWT parts throughout. RUF F&R bumpers, CF hood & fenders - all to replace the thrashed steel Earl Scheib painted crap I have. Paint flaking off on both sides of the hood, etc. Will be 2380 lbs when done.

Well I'm at 2490 1/2 tank of gas with little interior left and a no option 79SC - and that is light for this config. No LW parts.
So your weight makes sense.

Amusing thread. I bought one. Paid $169. (Wow! What a big deal! $169!!!) It's a splendid piece, as light as a sheet of typewriter paper and about as stiff as strong sheetmetal. It's the real deal, not carbon fiber wallpaper laid up like bass-boat fiberglass. I happen to like quality, even if it's in something as silly as a wristwatch...after all, you can tell perfect time for $20 and a quartz chip. I wonder how many people responding to this thread have white gauge faces or logo floormats, $169 worth under their filthy feet?
I'm also gonna buy the guy's carbon-fiber engine shroud, which I believe is $500 or so. After all, I wrote a book called the Gold Plated Porsche, how could I resist? Get lives, people, it's just a piece of fun. If you all were really so price-conscious, you'd be driving 350Zs. Stephan

It's great IMO that these Porsches attract small time enterpreneurs. As long as they are trying to make a quality product I'm glad to see it. I may even pic one up for an investment

Hey Randy if you go with Carb Kev bumpers ask if they are at least vaccum bagged if not autoclaved. The baking process allows the resin to cure with the fibre and creat an incredibly strong and lightweight piece.
Since the fuse cover is a rather small piece I wonder if its vacuum bagged. Since seeing this I think I might make one or two out of kevlar, fg, carb kev and maybe carbon carbon. I'm lucky enough to have a couple vacuum chambers at my school and a large oven as well, not as hot as an autoclave but it might help. Not bashin the piece this guy made though.

I don't have one, but why don't I need one (stock that is)? I pondered buying one of these earlier since I don't have a stock cover.
Yes, I will have other lightweight components and like Steve, I am considering the shroud that just looks so da*& cool. People are buying the amber shrouds and still have two part paint jobs on their cars Must we be bodies in white, to have fun with lightweight parts!

Most people won't have a scale that can accurately measure these. The stock one weighs only 155 grams, so there is little wt. that can possibly be saved. Like I said, Pelican has the stock ones, p/n 911.610.101.01 Again, I'd buy the CF one if it was 20 bucks. "white gauge faces or logo floormats, $169 worth under their filthy feet?" - not I. NOW.... guess what, sports fans? There is a piece that actually saves a few lbs. if done in CF - any ideas what it is? The watershileds on the carbs. The ones on the PMOs are steel and fairly hefty. I swear the ones on my Webers on the car I sold were made from Al - they were definitely lighter. There used to be a guy called carbonjoe who made the CF watershields. That is one item I am going to buy. |

Does anyone make a CF Fan or Fan Shroud? Imagine how much weight would be saved if they were done correctly in an autoclave? Sure they'd be quite expensive, but the weight would be saved in two crucial areas, the REAR of the car and the TOP of the engine. Not to mention less reciprocating weight with a CF Fan. I'd be really interested if someone offered either or both of them. If not, hmmm...business opportunity, any venture capitalists out there?

fan would definately need to be autoclaved, balanced and have alu inserts for mounting. a rather complicated piece that would cost a pretty penny im sure. why not just drill it out? hahaha. if your all about saving weight build it R style, there are quite a few early 911's out there that way a tad under 2k without crazy carb kev pieces.

Steve, you're right, $169 is no big deal but how often do you see this item once it's installed. Does strength matter in this application? Is there any meaningful weight reduction?
I'd rather spend that $169 on stuff that I can actually see, especially from the drivers seat. Better yet, stuff which will make your driving experience more enjoyable. That same $169 will get you turbo tie rods ends, one+ H4 headlight, 2/3's of a Steve Wong chip etc. Money much better spent, IMHO.
