8x16 vs 9x17...?
Is there a recommended 'better' setup for front / rear wheel widths? I see wheel enhancement still has 8*16 fuchs, but apparently no 9*16's. So I could put my 7's on front and
end up with 7's and 8's front / rear. Or, I could go with Lindsey Racing 17's and I assume get 9's. Then I could go with 7*16 front and 9*17 rear. Is anyone able to merely widen 7*16's to 9*16's? I see no 9*16's for sale anywhere... Is either one of these combinations better or worse for overall handling (oversteer vs understeer, etc.)? I really want the extra width, but not at the expense of balanced handling at the DE's and on the road. Advice? Spike

The "best" factory fuchs setup for your car would be 8" 944 turbo fronts and 9" 911 turbo rears. 225/245 x16" combo on tires.
They seem to be available in the for sale forum most of the time. There are also 8 and 9.5 two piece 16" Fuchs and Lindey's two piece 17's as options. Last edited by rdane; 11-16-2004 at 09:51 PM.. |

The downside to the Lindsey's 9.5's is that you'll likely need to relocate an oil line (per lindsey's but feel free to verify). they can do the 3 piece in 17x9s with no changes to the car required.

Thank you very much, folks, for the info.
If I go with 7's and 9's will I get more understeer than if I go with 7's and 8's? Or is the actual effect nil between the two options? Spike

Wheel size isn't going to have a dramatic effect on handling. Tire width, and to a lesser extent, overall tire diameter, will. People generally run 245's on either 8's or 9's. With Lindsey 9's, you can fit 255's pretty easily.
But the point may be moot, as I don't think Lindsey is able to get the 9-inch barrels anymore. I think they can do 8 or 9.5 (or wider) now, but not 9. If you move the oil line, roll the fender lips, and machine a spring plate bolt, you can run 275's in the back on 10-inch Lindseys.
