Steve Wong Chip
A few months ago, I got Steve to customise a chip for me. After I had installed it, I would give him feedback. Through some correspondence and me describing the responses, he eventually sent me 4 chips. Recently, I had my car dyno-ed and found that the air-fuel ratio was too lean. I contacted Steve and he immediately re-mapped another chip to correct the "leanness". With the new chip, the car now runs smoother and another dyno showed an increase in both torque and power. I sent the results to him and guess what ? He still thinks there is room for improvement and is re-mapping yet another chip for me. HE THE MAN !!! I just wanted you guys out there to know that, whatever the debate may be as to whether performance chips work or not, I am one very satisfied customer and Steve's after sales service is tops... can't wait to get the next and hopefully, final chip.. : )

Ok...I'm no Loren but...
How do you feel about the fact that your first chip had the car running too lean??? You'd think by now, that wouldn't even be close to possible. A lean condition, especially under load (track for example) could easily equate to a complete engine rebuild...especially if your fuel quality wasn't quite up to snuff. Somehow I wouldn't be thrilled to unwittingly offer my engine up for experimentation. There are a million variables....be careful! I went through a few SW chips a while ago (before my 3.6 swap) and ultimately gave up and went back to stock after some exceedingly poor track performance at Barber Motorsports Park. I'm just glad I didn't launch my engine. Steve's a great guy and bends over backward to help you, but...

I'm have to say that this was also my first thought. If you had not gone to dyno your car, would you ever have known that the car was running lean? Not until something went wrong... Put simply, this just reinforces my belief that chipping a car (or modifying the electronics) requires direct hands-on work, with a o2 sensor and better still, a knock sensor to make sure you're within tolerances. Or if you are buying a ready made chip, then it's important to do proper testing once it is installed. This is so very important. Having said that, the fact the Steve Wong will custom a chip to your particular requirements/mods/climate makes it a million times safer than the numerous companies that sell generic chips claimed to "increase a car's performace", with no regard to where the chips may be used. YMMV, Puf

Winky's problems were due to an anomoly somewhere in the Motronic system of his newly built Euro spec 88 3.4 motor that causes it to meter leaner than normal. It could be due to his sensors, fuel pressure, or motronic box. His car was not used for experimentation, as is car is a particular case and we were trying to diagnose a lean stumble that does not occur on any of the other many 3.4s I've worked on, and I have dyno and afr logs from many 3.2s, 3.4s, all the way to 3.7s. As he's in Singapore, I requested for him to obtain an afr log from his local dyno, for which it confirmed abnormal fuel metering. Since I can't be there to diagnose his car, the only solution was just to program a substantially greater than normal overall injector duty cycle to provide him the fuel to meet the target afrs. The revised chip worked - the dyno shows 242 hp at the wheels, and any further tweaking is just for perfection, as the entire afr curve is within 0.3 of target. To put it into perspective, this was a RUF 3.4 P/C package directly from RUF that came with their custom chip for the setup. Had he used the RUF chip, it would have actually run 6-10% leaner everywhere, including full throttle than the chip I sent him.

Hey Mike and Puf,
Thanks for feedback but to be fair to SW, I had asked him to customise a chip for me based on various mods I had done to my car. As I live in a far away tropical country, I think it's not easy to customise a chip especially when specific info requested by him was and is still not available. The point I am making is that he really does bend backwards to get it right and I have felt significant improvements in torque and power from the revised chips (psycological or otherwise). I have no doubts that his remapped chips for stock cars will find many a happy and satisfied customer as can be seen from all the previous threads on this issue. |

And to add to the chip debate, I have also installed a SW chip some time back and took it for a dyno and the AFR were very nice. Very smooth and no spikes anywhere......sadly that also means that Steve couldn't squeeze any more ponies out of every litre of very expensive gas here in Singapore!!
So, I can vouch for Steve that his 'custom' chip for my 87 3.2 carrera was spot on even in hot and humid Singapore. Engine is stock with just a sports exhaust and SW chip......and i am nowhere near 242 rwhp! TY, looks like you don't need to take a drive in my car for comparison now!! hahahahaha But for your peace of mind, I offer to take yours for a spirited test drive to verify the 242 ponies! |
