Help me pick my new wheels...

I'm going to upgrade my brakes and put on some 17" wheels. I love my polished Fuchs, but LindseyRacing can't make a 17x9 2-piece wheel anymore. I'm not crazy about all the bolts on a 3-piece wheel. The Fikse's are expensive, but I like the FM5 and FM10. I can get used 10-spoke 996 wheels for a good price, but they will require 1 1/2" spacers in the back. Well, what do you think?

If you choose to deal with Wheel Enhancement and trade in your Fuchs be prepared to NOT get your so called core deposit fully refunded. Learned from expensive experience.

I dealt with WE and they did give me what they said they would(sight unseen) on trade ins which was $100(ea) for 7" X 16" Fuchs. This however was probably on the low side but I did not want the hassle of selling them on my own.

Not what I expect you'll want to hear

I have a set of 930 brakes on my SC. I have a set of 7 and 9 Fuchs from a '86 Turbo finished like yours. Currently sitting in my garage are a pair of 17" Fikse FM10s and a set of 2 piece, custom offset Fuchs.

With the PIA all are with brake clearence, stud length on the factory rims and the resident problems of 3 piece rims and their resulting expensive upkeep ($80. each to reseal them every couple of years) I have a few conclusions for my own use.

225/245s fit with little effort on 16" wheels and are by far the lightest set up mentioned. The perfect setup IMO would be a two piece 8 and 9 with the correct offsets .

and what I like currently.

Although I'm not a big fan of spacers, there is a long list of wheels you can use besides the 10-spoke 996. 2000 Boxster S wheels look good on a 911, as do 2001 standard Boxster wheels. some people also like the 993 'Cup' wheels.

There is an early-offset set of 993 Cup replicas for sale here on Pelican, BTW.

Why did you rule out the 9.5-inch Lindseys? My solution in your shoes would be 8x9.5x17 2-piece Lindseys with 225/255 tires. (They're lighter than stock Fuchs, too.)

My vote is for the 1--custom fuchs 2--Fikse FM10 3--FM5. All wheels regardless of make will require maintenance/cleaning but those FM5's look really easy to clean but not my fav appearance-wise.

I also have to say: there's something about a black Targa bar and the black Fikses.

Bill's car is one 911 that just wouldn't look as cool with Fuchs.

Cleaning yes and a little maintenance yes. But none of the custom welded two piece wheels like Lindsey's or original Fuchs require new bollts and seals every couple of years to keep air in them as the three piece wheels like the Fikse do. I've seen two pair, no salt on the roads here, both have required a complete service in less than 4 years. At $80 per wheel ($320 for a set plus tax) done at the factory or what ever time and parts it costs you to do it. When they start leaking air I don't consider that "typical" maintenance for wheels.

You get a leak on a set of Fuchs and it is either a nail or you have spun the wheel inside the tire. Those kinds of things I don't mind worrying about

I want my vote back. That's the best idea.

Better hurry as yesterday was the last day for the deposits to be in.

Don't know anyone running them on an SC. Lots of folks "think" they would work but Dave Lindsey says no and Bill Verberg's chart indicates it might be tough. I really don't want to shave bolts or move oil lines. If anyone out there is running 9.5s, that remains my first choice.

After reading the other thread, it appears that I can likely make the 9.5's work. It I can, that will likely be my choice. Thanks for all the help!

If you're not in a big time crunch, I'd have them tack-weld you a single wheel, without any finish, and use it to test your backspacing.
