Factory toolkit help
Hey Gents!
My recently acquired '74 911 with an '80 930.07 engine is missing its toolkit. I'm trying to assemble a factory toolkit with a reasonably complete set of tools for this car / engine combination and found an SC toolkit on eBay as a starting point, however it's missing a few key items: ![]() (NOTE: 1/2/05 - Picture updated with completed toolkit) I know the tow hook, pliers, short and long straight blade screwdriver shafts need to be found but have a few questions. What should the towing ring look like for a '74 bumper? I've seen long and short ones on eBay. What is the 4" by 1/4" hollow tube (center, left of the allen wrench in picture) used for? Darryl, a lot of folks are hung up on "original" tool kits. And that's fine when "show" is the goal. If that's not your goal? Other than a few specific tools, like the fan belt wrench, that you should have in case the need arises, everything else can be bought via other tool sources for a lot less outlay than a similar "orignal" tool would cost, and it would function as well, if not better. I have a complete original tool kit for my car. I use mostly craftsman tools when I'm wrenching on the car. 'Nuff said?

OK, I'll admit it, I have a thing for the original tools but wouldn't think of using them on the car. I just think it's neat to have all the original parts and pieces, especially when it comes time to sell the automobile, hopefully at a premium price. Obviously with an updated engine in my 911, concours isn't my concern.

I'm not sure, but I always thought the hollow tube might be placed over something like the allen wrench to make a handle. It was the only thing that I could come up with.
I did actually use my toolkit, it worked great.

![]() I didn't have any luck searching the infobase on "toolkit" (one word) but that post is everything I was looking for! Hey Steve! You're close, here's something I found last night out on eBay regarding that little hollow tube: "TOOL HANDLE EXTENSION FOR THE RIBE "STAR" TOOL TO LOOSEN THE ALTERNATOR SHAFT TO REPLACE THE BELT. THE RIBE STAR TOOL IS THE "L" SHAPED TOOL THAT HAS A BLACK RIBE END ON IT, SIMILAR TO AN ALLEN WRENCH. FROM PORSCHE TOOL KIT. FOR 964 AND 3.2 911 TOOL KITS. ABOUT 4.75 INCHES LONG AND 1/4" INSIDE DIAMETER. HOLLOW CORE. " Here's the auction listing: I always thought the allen wrench with the black thing on it was for the battery hold-down bolt. Given the eBay description, perhaps the tube is intended as a "helper" for this allen wrench on the SC? I suppose getting my hands on an '80 SC owners manual would be a good place to start too! The one for my '74 is very weak on tools and what they're intended to be used for. I'm still confused on the right tow hook for my '74... I saw this type on eBay too, is it correct? You might want to get the book : The 1974 - 1989 911 Authenticity series by Mark Haab. It covers the tool kits for those years, Plus lot's of other usefull stuff ![]() |

So Daryl doesn't feel so alone I'll admit it. I'm an OEM toolkit junky, too. Maybe Wayne could put a nice "OEM repro Kit" together, eh? Something with nice German tools like Heyco?
You can actually still buy all the OEM BMW Motorcycle kits from dealers. Is the same true of Porsche? (I have nightmares thinking how much an OEM kit for my SC would cost!)

The open-end wrenches, and the pliers, in the tool kit are not very good. I find Craftsman box-end-open-end combination wrenches superior. Now, if I could only find the Porsche "Spark Plug Tool" missing from my kit.

I'm looking for a 24 mm lug wrench for the fan pulley. I have the 22mm which worked for my old alternator.

1980 SC tool kit
For what it's worth here's a pic of my tool kit.
It's does'nt have an extention tube, but it might be missing. I thought the tube might be an extention for the screw driver ? As I have a long and short phillip's ? but if it's just strait with no notches it wouldn't work for that. I also checked my owner manual and it says very little about what the different tools are used for. Just that it has a tool kit for road side repairs. My wrenches are all german made and the smallest one is 5.5 mm and is made by Gedore Germany. I'm not sure if it came in the kit and may have been added as the others are just marked drop forged Germany. OK, so what is that spark plug socket and where do you find it? I have looked all over Pelican for a spark plug socket that would work well on a 911 and I can't figure out which one would work best.

I actually have the spark plug tool and since I now have twin-plugged the engine with smaller plugs, it doesn't fit anymore.

The factory kit pliers are pretty bad. While mine don't look rusted, they are jammed shut and are never coming back, unless I work on them for a while. (must be rust inside the hinge thing).
