are there any tricks or is this a simple swap?

The 901 will bolt up (hole pattern is the same), but then comes the cltuch, flywheel, clutch lever arm assembly.

What year 911???

Remember, the 901/911 was designed for a smaller displacement, lower torque engine than a 915. The 901 1st gear is susceptible to failure if you try and light up the tires. Would I use a 901 with a 3.6? No way.

Not too difficult to do. As with everything, the devil is in the details.

First you want a good fresh transmission, not something with 10 years of Daytona 24s on it.

It needs to accommodate the 225 mm pull-type clutch. That usually means a ’70-’71 911 transmission and all the clutch linkage.

The clutch disc needs to be from a ’70-71. The splines are different from a 915.

You need to pay attention to the CV joint type and size.

You need the 901 transmission mount.

None of the 901s came with electronic speedometers.

You will need to stretch the wires for the back-up light switch.

The shifter is different at the handle.

The easy part is it will bolt up to a 911 engine and fit in the chassis. The starters will interchange. The throttle linkage is the same.

Best,
Grady

You're not really contemplating using a 901 to back up your 3.6 are you?

guys I am looking for a cheap alternative to get my 911 running good enough to drive, the 915 in her now is damaged to the extent I doubt it can even be rebuilt. I just need to get something at a good price so I can have my transportation...I will worry about performance further down the line. All I can say is the car is either going to run with a inexpensive fix (used 915) or be sold for parts because my wife is not happy at all with the car she calls the money pit.

Get a used 915 and rebuild it yourself.

A 901 probably won’t be suitable for you and may be more expensive.

Best,
Grady

The good news is that you can rebuild the 915 yourself for reasonable money. If you carefully examine all the parts, most will probably be reuseable. Will it be a complete new tranny? No. Will it work OK? Yes.

You are better off to use a 911 (1970-71) than a 901 because the CV's will mate up. I did this on a '73 car with an '86 engine, late 1970's arms & wheel hubs/axles and a '71 trans. I tried a 901 first and it was almost impossible to mate the CV's into the car (barring a lot of custom work at a machinst's). I have several threads on this type project and on making an adapter for a 911 so you can use the improved 915 support bar.

But I wouldn't try to use it with a 3.6 - or to autoX my car.

For your uses, you want to just rebuild that 915 trans. You may not be able to wait a year for Wayne's new book, but people say it isn't hard. Will your time input pass the wife test?

I agree that a rebuild for the 915 is the best solution...but I need her for my daily transportation needs. This is not an easy project for me to tackle by any means so I will have to be creative. I was looking to get a useable 915 to place in the car and then rebuild mine as time and funds permit. So far the usable 915 at a fair price has been the needle in the haystack.

Shuie has a 915 in the classifieds. Seems like a good price.

FS: stock 2.4T MFI motor and 915 tranny from '72

I was just about to post Shuie's thread...

I have a couple of 915s as well, but shipping is gonna be a PITA. I just weighed one I have on the side from a '83 ROW SC... ~115lbs on the shipping scale.

That's your best solution. Even if a 901/911 came up cheap you could lose the savings in the clutch and other details.

Or worse, get halfway through it and a cheap 915 pops up.
