930 4-spd/5-spd conv. cost?

As there are not many 5 spd 930's out there what would the cost be to put in a G50 into an old 930? Viable?
Prices of 4spd 930' seem to be around $8-10K cheaper than the rarer 5spd.
Worth conciderring?

I have an old issue of excellence that has a RUF 5 speed for a 930 advertised for like $9,000.

With all the 3.6 to 915 conversions being done, and other monster mods to N/A motors mated to a 915 trans, I don't see why you couldn't run one beefed up some to a 930 motor. That would definatley cut cost. Of course the gearing would probably be all off, and that would drive the cost way up.

i put a 915 in my 77 930 and it's a blast to drive. no more getting taken off the line, and much nicer to drive around town. just like a regular 911.
my 87 cab has a 87 930 engine and G-50, and it's better than a 4 speed, but still a bit high geared. the car with the 915 is more responsive.

With a stock 930 I guess a 915 would be okay but the nature of the beast with a 930 imagine leads you to the dark side of HP junkies!
I think a 915 tranny would be outgrown!
Thanks for the price of the Ruf box.
Did'nt rennsport do some tranny mods?

If you want to know how a clever/frugal Yankee would do it, ask Pelican member "dean". Dean did a G50 upgrade on his Turbo SC.

Hey Chris are you calling me cheap?

I did install a 930 motor in my SC. First I had the stock 915 in front of it. I liked the gearing with that. But I wasn't sure it would last. So I put a Euro G50 it. I think the gearing is very close to the stock 915 that I had. I did the complete conversion for @ $4400. I sent the case out to be machined. There are several G50 trannys to choose from. There is also a G50/50 that is heavier duty and more expensive. I also think from looking at the gear charts the gears are taller. Which I didn't like.

I wouldn't get the Ruf due to cost and stinky synkros.

Whatever it is you are, I am too. I prefer to think of us a "frugal". Remember, any engineer can do something for $10 but a great engineer does it for a buck.

Ben,

John Walker is correct on the 915 box in a 930. I have a modified 915 in my 82, world of difference. Shoots you to the turbo powerband in a fraction of the time of a 4-speed. Excellent upgrade!

I guess what I really wanted to know is - would it be cheaper to find a good 4 spd 930 or hunt around for the right '89 5spd 930- although they seem to fetch a premium!.
Which G50 was it in the '89?
And would the 915 still be good for a lightly modified 930 (350Hp-ish) or only for stock HP.
The 915 route is tempting for cost although the G50 is a smoother shifting tranny!.

I am looking down this route as I may be stationed out of East USA this summer and if so refuse to be porscheless for another 6 months!!

I drove a '78 stock 4 spd 930 three yrs ago and it felt a slouch compared to the 86 Carrera- maybe it was the gearing?
Thanks for the advice

Rgds Ben

I'll add my data point. Modded 930 engine in an SC w/915 and Sachs clutch.
Around 350HP to the rears, 10,000+ miles with no issues.

There are arguments that a properly set up 915 will shift as well as a G50. There are a few old threads on the subject.
