Hotrodding an SC?
I was thinking about backdating and hotrodding an Euro carrera 3.0 liter but now I'm put off by the inherent weakness of the 2.7 crank, so I'm thinking of buying an SC instead, which still had 70.4mm throw but the webs were thickened plus flywheel were changed from 6 bolt to 9 bolt, and rods were still held by 10mm rodbolts, rather than later 9mm.
I know of a nice SC coupe for sale, low optioned car - no s/r and no a/c, original paint. If I do the following engine mods: MFI from a 3.0 RSR performance mahle p+c from andial 36/36 heads (sodium filled valves) or should it be bigger? early S cams SSI's what power output will it create? I think you'll be in the Carrera 3.0 neighborhood (225-230 HP). For my money I'd find a nice fresh 3.6 and drop it in.

You are going in the right direction. A 74.4x100 or 74.4x102 with twin plugs, early S cams or equivalent, and MFI will make an outrageous and powerful engine. It will have some of the best throttle response ever. The CR is determined by your access to high octane fuel – the higher the better. I have local access to 112 race gas delivered to my house.
The other half of the equation is light weight. Get in the 2000# range and everything improves remarkably – acceleration, braking, cornering, and handling response. Keep the CG as low as possible. Weight as far forward as possible. With an SC you can hide great suspension under a “stock appearing” bod. Use 7x16 and 8x16 black center Fuchs and appropriate tires. Soothing green, gray, or blue helps avoid unpleasant encounters with the law. Quiet exhaust doesn't attract unwanted attention. A true “Wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Drive safely. Best, Grady PS: Paul, what is your Airedale’s name? I have had “Turbo” and two “Targa.” The current Targa's nickname is “Nutcase.” We also have a yellow Lab and a Garfield all laying in a pile on my feet. G.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the inherent weakness of the 2.7 crank." If you already have a Euro Carrera 3.0 case with the small journal crank, this is one of the better platforms for a hotrod rebuild. What you have described should be great with this setup and shouldn't have any inherent weaknesses. The 6 vs 9 bolt flywheel isn't going to have any problems with the power you're proposing and was fine for the early turbo cars.
If you're looking for an excuse to buy a new SC that's one thing, but don't do it just for the engine if you've already got the best.

If you want more power what you described in not only old fashioned and clunky but also extreemly expensive. For power start w/ a 993 or late 964 block, cams, Motec, and go from there ![]()
