Removed Windshield - Best way to clean off the residue?

Just got the windshield out. Very little rust in the corners so all is good. I'm planning on dremmeling off the surface rust and painting it with a good rust inhibitor.

Question: What is the best way to clean out the residue in the channel? There's black stuff left from the windshied seal and was wondering the quickest way to clean that stuff out of there?

Thoughts?

I managed to clean the black sealant stuff off with liquid lighter fluid and an old toothbrush. Worked a treat. If you've got any tips on how to get the screens back in I'd appriciate your help. I did post a thread awhile back but no one responded...sobsob. Guess it's cos I'm new and from England...M

There's plenty of info on putting them back in. What I've read is that you need:
1) Place the new seal and trim piece on the windshield
2) Wrap some cord/rope around the inside.
3) Lubricate the rope and the winshield seal with either electrical lubricant (preferred) or very soapy water.
4) Place windshield in with the cord ends being on the inside
5) While having someone press firmly down, begin pulling the cord around locking the seal on the inside. You'll want to press where the cord is being pulled out.

I'll try the lighter fluid. That makes sense that it should work. Good luck.

As for being a newby, no worries. Most times, the request gets pushed down into the second or third page before anyone can take a look at it. That's why you see the bump on some threads. It just bumps them to the top of the queue so that it's on the first page.

Not so, just didn't see it. Always helpful Yanks about, whether you want 'em or no.
I've always put the center of the cord (soft clothesline for example) at center top of the wind screen, run it down both sides and overlapped the cord at the center bottom. I've always done this dry, but using a lubricant to help position the windshield as you go might be a good idea. Someone can gently push from the outside as you pull the rubber lip over the metal lip of the body using the cord you've inserted into the channel. Giant suction cups on the outside might be of help too. Search all this a bit to see the methods used by various individuals.
