Drivers Ed. rules/prep question.
This is a general question. Are the DE rules specific to the hosting club or the track? I'm thinking about Jack Olsen's summertime "race and bake" event at Thunderhill this summer. My 14 year old son wants to go desperately, but I'm not sure how much fun it would be for him. Can he ride?
Also, what are the car prep rules. I've done a search, but can't find a specific list.

Rules on ride-alongs vary. Looser clubs allow it. Some allow rides only with instructors. Either way your son can likely get a ride-along even if not with dad.
Most all have "parade laps" at lunch. Anyone can go out, but speeds are kept low. I would have loved to go to something like this when I was 14! Ride-alongs will just be icing on the cake. Safety requirements vary, but for DEs equipment requirements are generally pretty light. Be sure to pay attention to the clothing requirements and bring a compliant change of clothes for your son so he can ride along. Shorts and t-shirts will be right for hanging out, but typically you'll need long sleeves, pants, and shoes for in the car. Everything must be natural fiber.

Here is a good thread on race karts – very appropriate for a 14-year old.
Go cart racing and 911s Here is the most recent thread on preparation: Driver's Education Equipment List If you want a copy (100K+ MS Word.doc) of my draft on how to go to DE events, send me your e-mail address to gradyclay@hotmail.com. It is too large a file to send through Pelican. Best, Grady

In the PCA DE's I'm familiar with (New England), people under 18 can't drive at the track or go in the pits. Accept for special events; like charity laps, ride alongs aren't allowed at most events.

The minor rule for PCA events comes from the national offices.
