Bosch H4 Replacement Lens NOT replaceble?

I purchased the Bosch H4 Replacement Lens from Pelican. I tried to install them today but found the old lens is glued on with industrial strength adhesive.

Is there a way to remove the glue, or did I just waste over $50?

They're not glued, it's possible the rubber gasket fused to the glass and bezel. Try a little glycerin around the edge of the chrome ring to release the rubber.

plymouthcolt,

I see your signature says your car is a 88. Are your headlights the original units from the factory or have they been upgraded to the European H4 assemblies?

If they are the original headlights, then your lenses are H5 lenses. There is a big difference. Take a look @ the bottom, middle of the lens and I think there is the H5 marking above the Bosch logo? The H5 units are indeed those which have lenses permanently affixed to the reflector housing. Translation: if you need a new lens, you must get the entire reflector housing.

If your lights are the European H4 units, then ignore what I said. jpahemi is right on.

For others who are curious, the H5 is on the left and the Euro H4
is on the right.

Sorry J.P. No spare springs.

The one pictured was takenapart when I bought them, to see how it's put together. So as long as I went through the trouble of disassembly? Figured i'd take a few pictures.

plymouthcolt,

That is the H-5 lens. To replace these you need the reflector/lens unit PP #C-631-909-00 I need to do the same on one of my lights.

Not wanting to high jack the thread but are the H-4 lens
and the H-1 lens the same? I need new lenses for my H-1s because they are so pitted.
They look similar.

the refractor design is different between H1 and H4. i see a lot of them mixed up. the bulbs are in different positions between the two types, so the light doesn't get directed to the right place if the wrong lens is used.

JW. thanks for clarifying that. I did find the lenses here with our host. I just have a hard time paying 40 bucks apiece.

JW, you never cease to amaze me with your wealth of knowledge of these cars.
thanks.

I also need to improve my H4 reflectors. I pulled mine (am 84 Carrera) with H4 lights. Mine were dull, so I bought the bright blue/white bulbs. I pulled the lights and noticed my H4 reflectors had little reflective material left. The new bulbs had little improvement, the reflector is just near non-reflective. Is that part repaceable? Sorry to hijack the thread, my headlights suck (and my ground is also poor, or non-existant). Can I just replace the reflector? Thanks guys...

Big hint from the posted pic....

It's an H5 ( as mentioned)...see "DOT" and the aiming "teets" to aim the lens using US equipment that attches to the front face....I'll bet it says H5 somewhere on the lens, too...

The H4 reflectors may still be available; contact Daniel Stern, he has good conections in Germany.

You could also have them replated; I'm in the middle of having a set of H1's done.

Can you pass a state inspection with the H-4 since they are not DOT approved?

Yes, not to many inspection stations check the DOT lens markings; their're more concerned that they function.

Lightbulb Replacement lens source

Upon seeing this post I was trying to think of the place I ordered my h4 and Carrera 84-89 fog lenses. The url is www.foreigncarpartsonline.com They have Bosch h4 lenses ~$30/piece and fogs for ~$29-$42. Go to the site, click on Porshce parts and enter keyword lens. I think that price is rock bottom?

You can have your old reflectors re-chromed and they turn out great. I had mine done about 2 months ago and they are excellent, I was shocked at the quality. I sent them to:

Ideal Custom Plating
937 S 6th Ave Tucson 85701
Toll Free 1-888-878-9090

It cost me $95 for both plus shipping and took about 3 weeks. A little slower than I'd have liked but it was worth it and about 1/2 the price of anywhere else I could find.

How many do you need? I have a couple at home (I believe) that I will give you.

Might have some H4 reflectors in my garage attic if someone needs them. Lenses were broke during a wreck. But I kinda remember the reflectors being OK.
