Mass Flow Sensor... Why can't anything be easy on a 911?

I guess there's no such thing as an easy project on a 911.

9 months and some change after first attempting to order a mass flow sensor for my RSA, I finally have one in my hand. They of course forgot to ship the instructions which tells you what wiring connections to make, and any helpful details about how to get it into the car, and no one there could seem to find one in the last two hours. It's just as well, I think I need to rewire their harness anyway. It doesn't look too bad, but I've seen the insulation they used cause a fire in an SC.

It's kind of neat that it's got a tuner that hooks up to a laptop, but at the same time it's really annoying that I've now got to route the wires into the passenger compartment and figure out some place to put the darn thing.

Oh well, I can at least do everything but actually make the wiring connections until I find out how they should interface with the car's harness. I'll try to post some pics of the conversion over the next couple of days.

I think I'm going to return the mass flow sensor... the company can't tell me how to wire it, and they also shipped it in a way that it can't be hooked up to the car without modifying it. So unless someone with experience with Pro-M mass flow sensors chimes in in the next few minutes and parts the clouds, I think I'm going to not even bother with this P.O.S.

upon closer inspection it appears they're only idiots not necessarily completely incompetent, they shipped the wrong sized sensor... so somewhere the right sized one exists... still that leaves the wiring which is worse really.

lol, I'm just really pissed off at the moment, it's probably not as bad as I'm making it sound... well I mean it is, I don't see how you can stay in business pulling crap like this. I guess I could make it work... especially since everything else is already installed I just need to find a tube to connect the sensor itself to where it needs to go, find out how to connect the tube to the sensor, make a bracket to support the sensor/aircleaner, and then figure out what wires go where...

what sucks is that I waited a really long time to do this mod simply because of the horror stories I'd heard... this company was supposed to make some good stuff, I know a few pelicans have it installed I hope they didn't go through this B.S.

The 964 AFS is different from this MFS (993). The former being the old style volume measuring flapper controlled air flow sensor and the latter the more modern hot platinum wire or grid mass flow sensor. The later is more accurate and less restrictive (no door flap for the air to go around), hence capable of more power. However since one has to make all the modifications before the newer system can work with the older rest of the DME-FI system, the hassle may not be worth the pain in learning how to make it work. Easier to just stuff the complete entire 993 engine+electronics into the RSA.

Yeah... but the price of stuffing the whole 993 engine into the RSA is another matter. Plus I love my engine, it's strong, doesn't leak... now I do plan on putting a G50/20 in the car sometime in the near to distant future.

I ordered the sensor from Pro-M A few pelicans have them, and I talked with some of their techs for a long time before ordereding, and honestly they probably make good sensors, they just have no idea how to make it work on a 911, so they shouldn't advertise making kits for 911s. Also, I do think they sent me the wrong sized unit which isn't helping matter.
