The build continues, part 4

AAAaaKKK! My poor car! Guess the RBRDUK's weigh? Paint dilemma? All encouraged by project cars like these among many: ![]() ![]() ![]() Here is where I am today. Epoxy base drying for the first coat of primer and then body color (light blue metalic ) paint going on early next week. New interior going in a few days later. A number of trick things happening on this car you won't see everyday. Really exciting for me to see this project come together. The tough decisions were body style (to flair or not) and paint color. Decisions made easier by current wheel and tire choices and a unique color. Hopefully I'll be driving it to the XXX on the 12th. Hi Jeff, color is going to be "light blue metalic" close to cobalt blue from a 2000 Porsche. I first saw it on a '99 C2 in the 2/05 issue of EXCELLENCE that 9ff did as a lwt car. Very close to the '72 gemini metalic blue but a bit lighter yet.

dear god!.. I see I am going to have to be Porscheless for a while while Dane gives me the inspiration to do all the stuff i normally only think about... The car is f'ing awesome loooking in primer.. so I know it's going to be IMHO one of the badest machines on this BBS! good work Dane.. damn good ideas you have for the car.. I kNOW it's tough to do but the sunroof delete and shaved raingutters are by far the best cosmetic touches I think.... looks damn nice!

First layer of primer coat. Notice any details missing? Couple more shots of primer and then we start adding color! They have done a bunch of sanding already and it is beginning to feel baby ass smooth. What were the numbers?
Paul Frere in PORSCHE RACING CARS of the '70s. "Porsche shaved the rain gutters off of a 935 and did some wind tunnel tests of the aero impact. There was a 3% drag reduction and a 23% increase in rear down force. That's pretty signficant.." RUF cars did this on some Yellowbird and others because it was so effective. Those numbers can't hurt a duck either I suspect ![]() Bet it cuts some wind noise as well. ![]() ![]() I am learning patience with this project. Hardest thing about this car is I have never seen one done exactly like it. Driving me crazy trying to image the finished car. It will have unique paint, interior and body work. (at least to me anyway)
When I bought this car I took it one diretcion over a three year period. In that time I learned a lot about the cars and what I really wanted in a 911. My business builds custom products everyday. So it is easy to realise what a guy really needs is one of every model. Since I could only afford one custom car this is going to be it. The next one will be a 996 or 997 and I suspect either will be cheaper in the long run. The idea with this one was to be able to pull into any group of great Porsches and still have mine be something different with my own signature. Took me a long time to decide on a narrow body and the mods. Once I got started it was what "would I have ordered from Porsche". Then I just let my imagination run. Hope you guys are enjoying the ride as much as I am and it helps send you on to your own adventure! |

is darker than gemini blue. I think you should paint it one of the IROC colors.

What was the method for re-welding the gap where the rain gutter seam had been? I've heard that it's a pain in the neck to do.

Jack it is a cut and weld affair. Start at both ends, cut and seam weld a bit at a time (4") and keep moving around so you don't get any warping. A piece of rod fit the gap perfectly. More labor involved chopping the gutters than doing a steel wide body. I went for less lift.
This is NOT how Mark @ Eurotech did mine. But an interesting thread none the less. I have been told it makes the car more rigid if done right. Less if done wrong. I had zero filler added when they were done...just a clean sheet of steel with little grinding to clean it up. That says more about Mark as a welder than the process I suspect. ![]() Shaving the rain gutters (pics.) Andy, sadly it isn't an IROC car. A clone would have been easier to decide color on. Beautiful color you have picked though. There are so many good colors it was really hard to choose just one. Hopefully the "ice blue" will be something I can live with and still have it jump out at you in a crowd. |

I'd love to see a good thorough write up on the method yer man used.. I would ove to have that done when the time comes for me to park the car for a while and REALLY get down to messing with it. I'd go with that Mint/celeste green they had on the Euro 964 RS'd.. that' the color I am going with when the time comes.

Dane have the back's of the buckets painted to color match the car.. that is a sweet look IMHO..

If the guy who shaved the raingutters was able to do it without using any filler that's pretty amazing. Must have taken him forever, it's pretty easy to overheat a roof panel and cause it to warp if you move too quickly. Car looks great looking forward to seeing the finished product (although a project car is never really finished).

Stoopid me didn't even notice the rain gutters, or lack there of. That is a cool mod! Love it. Your wheels are going to look good on my car. Glad I could help with the funding of the project
