How to modify front bumper?
When I was at the 24 hours of Daytona this past weekend there was a 911 in the Porsche corral that had a modified front bumper. The modification was the owner had removed the front rubber strip and filled it in flush and it looked great! Unfortunately I never caught up with the owner to discuss how he did it so how would you do this?I'm thinking you would weld in a piece of aluminum about 1/8 thick, grind the welds flush then skim coat some bondo, does that sound right?I'm telling you it really looked good.I want to do this on my 83SC.The car had black plastic covers over the bolt heads that held the bumper on,it really looked slick.I want to do this to my front bumper and rear to "clean up" the lines of the car.Comments, suggestions?

either they bondo'd the groove, or did as you describe. either way would probably work fine, no real flexing there.

Banned but not out, yet..

I did what you are talking about by simply bondoing the holes, sanding, blending and repainting. They came out looking great. If there are slight imperfections, they can easily be covered by colored tape, ala RS. You can go to the effort of welding, but the result will be the same. Good luck!

Interesting...
I took my front bumper strip off this weekend and was pondering the different approaches to re-finishing it without the strip. Any pictures out there without the front bumper strip, particularily for mid 80's Carreras? Dan

I was going to do the same along with the rear bumper. I was also going to reverse the attachment points to inside the bumper and hide all the mounting holes. Welding aluminum is fun.
Welding the aluminum strip is a little better than spackling that crack IMO ;-) -Jeff

I'm also interested in seeing what others have done.
I recently bought a glass rear to reduce weight off the back but want to retain the stock front since I already have many hours into my RSR look valance and setrab center mounted cooler. We need pics !
