removing front wheel spacer from axle

This is the part I need to remove.


I tried but not much room or available space to pound it off. Seems like it is really pressed on tight. Any removal tips?

Pounding is not the best way to get off the spacer ring. You could damage the spindle.

Since the spacer is pressed onto the spindle, a more effective way is to use some type of puller (like a gear puller) to uniformly draw the spacer off of the spindle.

The picture is a gear puller, but something similar would be what you want to use.



The jaws need to be slim enough at the ends to get the jaws behind the flange of the spacer ring.

You might try the local parts store and see if they rent a jaw style puller. There should be enough of a lip on the back side of the spacer to get the jaws to bite and then heat the spacer a bit with a torch (propane is fine) and tighten down on the puller. There is a rubber o-ring behind the spacer so use care when heating it.

Thanks. That is what I was looking for.
I will get a replacement o-ring because I am betting the original is still on.

So I guess I look for a 2 arm puller, is that the jaw style Gary?

Why are you removing the spacer? There is no need to; how much sealing do you think that o-ring has to do if the spacer is on that tightly? Leave it be, otherwise you risk ruining the spacer and the spindle for no good reason. Jim

I bought a 2 arm gear puller and removed the front spacers. Thanks mucho. That amount of gunk behind each was scary!

My car has high miles and the more stuff I remove the more things I find I need to replace (and I am replacing lots). I want this car perfect when I am done.

Jim is right that there is no need to remove that spacer, no matter how old it is.
