I got fatter..

The first pic was the first generation of my car, I found the car got faster by piling on more aero on the front and rear:

Car had 245/315's and 310 HP 3.0

cbx nice looking car thanks for the input.

911-32 I agree every set up is a compromise for some track.
I'd like my widebody on a track woth a shorter straight, just too much drag. It would be better on a track with a lot of transitions and turns. Yes my extreme tire sizes would be optimized with a 700hp twin turbo engine.

The opposite side of the spectrum would be the narrow 911s with no aero, fun cars but not optimized either.

For now I have ample tire to fender clearance and perhaps I'll try some various tire combos. I did think the weight and size of the 27.2 inch tires was more than I needed. The car felt heavy and the shifting a bit more balky compared to the Jim's smaller Hoosiers.
On the other hand from a gearing standpoint the 27.2 was too much the 25.5 ran out a little early on the track out of T6 and T2.
Maybe a set of new 315/35/18 710s that are 26.2 tall would be fun to try?

It will stay a widebody, maybe a little less wide? Maybe glass front fenders, whatever improves lap times.

Video link isn't working for me.

Mike, glad to see the progress you are making. Please keep the reports coming as you dial in the suspension and tire sizes.

I got involved in the testing a bit late but, quickly found the car has a ton of potential. As far as the amount of tire, I think with the weight of this car and the torque of the 3.6 you can run about as big of a tire as you want as long as you're not getting much over 140 mph often. The most important part now that the car has been shaken down some, is to put some brand new rubber on it now. I also have to add that not only does the car look cool but it REALLY sounds cool with that 2 in to 1 tip Jae built. There is a LOT going on with this car and it's going to take a little more effort to get it dialed but, I'm sure you'll see sub 28's soon and then Mike will have a better handle on what it will do from there. About 5 years ago I worked with a 1969 912 that had a stock 3.6 with headers 10.5" and 13" wheels with as big of rubber that would fit on them and we did a low 1:23 with that car. Mikes car is going to go fast....really fast ... soon.

Cary thank you for tuning on the car.
It was genuine extravagance for an amateur driver like me to benefit from all your experience.
You had all of my confidence after you made your first adjustment.
Cary would ask the questions, I’d answer the best I could and then he and Jae would make a change and send me back out for 2 or 3 hot laps.
The car got better every adjustment!
Cary is the man. Thanks!

Next time we will try to be even more prepared.
After you plot the car Jae can set it up to your specifications.
It will have new Kumho 710 26x13.9 and 25.4x11.4 tires along with assorted rear wing wikerbills.
Hopefully early in 06’ we can get the car tuned to its potential.
Then as you said learning to drive it to its potential is all I’ll have to do.

Well, best of luck from my side of the pond.

I guess some of my "comment" was derived from the fact that the main track we raced at had a very long straight and some pretty technical narrow sections after that. Perhaps a slightly peculiar track where hp was unduly rewarded and a great handling car was a little penalised.

Cheers,
Richard

The car is ready to go for a weekend PCA TT at Big Willow.
The car seems very ready for the weekend,
although the Center Force clutch has us a little worried.
We are thinking of trying a different clutch after the TT.
More after the weekend.

Here are the engine specs and yesterday's dyno results.
1995 993 3.6 engine.

A custom chip tailored on the Dyno specific for this engine.

100 octane Sunoco unleaded gas.
Stock compression.
Stock induction and jet hot coated headers with 2 into 1 open pipe.

Super cup cams with 964 style cam gears and RSR solid rockers.
Very light intake blending, stock size valves.
Heavy duty valve springs and titanium retainers.

Carrillo rods

Adjustable fuel regulator.
Nology wires and coil amplifiers.

Dowel pins installed in the case

Windage mods, boat tailed case and cylinder bases and piston skirts cut.

Everything has been balanced
Light weight flywheel and Center Force clutch.

Piston tops and the valve face surfaces received heat barrier treatments.
The Piston sides received a Teflon treatment.
The Valve springs and retainers received a Cyro treatment.

Just the graphs from the dyno day.

This one show the old baseline chip in blue.

In Blue lines are the old baseline chip.
HP being the higher line and the lower blue line is the torque.

Above in red is the HP and Torque with the new improved chip.

This graph shows the best chip HP curve and the air fuel ratio line on the bottom as well.

Here is the best chip only HP and Torque curves.

Yeah starting with a bum chip makes for a dramatic difference.
The bad chip works well in a buddy's similar 3.6.
He uses a Bosch adjustable fuel regulator to tune the the AFR and he said he saw 295hp on a different dyno.
Adjusting the fuel pressure would change the AFR over the entire curve so that has it's drawbacks too.
We choose to leave the adjustable fuel regulator at factory settings and adjust the AFR and advance with the chip.

Of note was a Weltmiester chip we also tried, I don't have a graph on that one.
It made 295hp and ran lean from 6k to 7k.
Most likely that chip was optimized for a stock 3.6.
Where mine needed a little more fuel on the top with the Super Cup cams, headers with open pipes too.

Thanks Adomakin, I too was impressed.
I really enjoy tracking these modern engines.
It gives you a lot of confidence to find your edge when you know the FI will be there.
Much better than a carbed car that suddenly drops a cylinder exiting a turn and reducing the weight transfer at a critical point.
Seeing the AFR on this run is what I would expect for from a Fuel injected engine.
I imagine replicating that AFR on a carbed engine might take some extra time and extra talent!
I have had 48 IDAs and 51.5 IDAs on VW drag engines and I'll never go back to carbs.

As is, I think the car will be spending time in very nice neighborhoods -- by which I mean 20's at Willow Springs.
Well we got the car 93% sorted and just enjoyed a fun couple of days at Big Willow.
Jae Lee from Mirage International came up and helped as we tested on Friday.
We started with softer rear springs but ended up going back to basically the same set up we had when Cary from ERP helped us a month ago.
We did try the wicker bill but the car was pushing exiting T2 and through T8.
So the wicker bill was removed and the pushing reduced.

Friday in testing with a new set of 710s it ran a session of 1:27 lap times.
A few 127.0 laps.
We were happy with the car and now we knew it was time for me to get some seat time and learn how to really drive it.
Tire management was a priority as we needed to save the new rear tires for Sunday's timed runs.
The new 710s 335/35/17 (25.5" tall) rear tires were replaced with some used but taller 710s 315/25/18 (26" tall).
The used taller tires took a second off my lap times so it ran 28s consistently till the end of testing on Friday.

Saturday morning was the PCA TT.
The car needed only gas and a clean windshield.
It ran great and felt competitive with the other AR class cars.
Then later in the afternoon while entering T8 at 135mph the driver's rear stub axle threads gave up.
The axle nut sheared the cotter pin and the nut backed off far enough for the axle splines to disengage from the stub axle.
With an 80% LSD that means the drive wheel remaining (the passenger side right) is the only drive wheel.
The means on power the right rear drive wheel rotates the car left 30 degrees immediately.
So trimming for the 135mph T8 right turn the car does just this.
Funny thing is with a 911 when the rear steps out your instinct is to give it gas to keep the rear behind you.
So when it stepped out I caught it and gave it throttle which made it step out again.
At that moment I figured a CV was busted and coasted back to the pit.
Jae quickly diagnosed the axle nut and was able to tighten it back down and replace the cotter pin.
The threads were a bit bunged up, it was difficult to tighten the last turn or so.
So it was back together. Jae and I discussed our options.
Maybe just take it out for a couple test laps and then if it held save it for timed laps the next day.
I gave Jae the honors of testing it.
Jae did 4 good laps and then tracking out from T6 same thing happened to him.
He coasted into the pits and we put it in the trailer.
Overall it was a very good experience.
Here is the only photo I have from the event.
If I get some better ones I’ll share them too.
The RSR+ at pit out surrounded by a couple other AR class cars.

I am considering having the car rebodied.
Just for fun I started a poll with pictures of a new body style possibility.
Click here here to pop in and vote for your choice.

The white car is Lowyder993s rebodied 150lbs+ lighter AR monster.
Friday I was his puppy in T9!

I was at the Streets of Willow for an event on Saturday with Anthony Rimicci (italcarguy). We had a good view of turn 8 from the top of his trailer and we enjoyed watching Ted's car fly by numerous times as the day went on.

Yikes! I wouldn't have had the luxury of a second chance. Must be the big tires. But still, at 135, things gotta happen quickly. All I can say is. "Good job."

Simon thanks for the photo.
Your location between Big Willow and SOW is the best spectator's place at the track.
It's like having two big screens both showing racing!
Maybe see you at the Alfa club Big Willow and Buttonwillow races.
Good luck at the track.

Zeke you are the glass is half full guy.
I had concern the save may have depleted my future good luck.
