Let's talk turbo -- is it time to upgrade?
Folks,
The actual turbo on my '76 930 has announced its retirement. The question is what to do. I can spend some cash-o-la on a rebuild of the original turbo, or go with something new (a k27 variant? which one?) The engine is at 50K, which is about 10K on a rebuild that moved it to 3.2L (7.6 compression, iirc???) Everything else is stock. (It's about to get an oil cooler up grade -- guess what the 40K failure was....) Anyway, I'm looking for BTDT or opinions on newer turbos, and pointers to conversion info if you have 'em! Yeh, the house is an eichler -- I appear to have a "cult issue". P-cars (the /6'er is mine) and eichlers. I tell my p-car junkies that an eichler is a p-car that doesn't have wheels, and I tell my eichler junkies that p-cars are are eichlers that move. Each of them has a design theme about them, and to some degree, there is a "love 'em or hate 'em" thing about them as well. (there are some great p-cars in the neighborhood tho -- just last week I heard about a 74 carrera w/16Kmiles on it -- I gotta get out more! (the old acura has been replaced by a hybrid of some sort -- they actually are pretty cool neighbors) kim.

I am by FAR not the most qualified guy to instruct you, but somebody needs to give you some direction so here goes. I recommend the K27 7200, it is a great all around upgrade and the best compromise in my opinion. It spools fast enough so that the car can be tracked on the weekends but also keeps enough of that big boost feeling that you bought the car for anyway. They are quite reasonable (as turbos go) and quite proven as I have seen TONS of them on 930s.
Of course, you do know that you are at the edge of the slippery slope, don't you??? Every 930 owner gets there at some point!!! You are NOT far from modern sportscar performance, if you want it! If I were you I'd consider with the turbo upgrade, an aftermarket intercooler (you'd have to replace your tail to fit it, but it is worth it in my opinioin), 1.0 boost spring, and an aftermarket exhaust (with dual pipes so you can hear the wastgate dump under full throttle). While not exactly cheap, that route would turn your car into a new animal. Heh heh heh, if you are really quiet you can hear the dark side calling!!! Best of luck TT ![]() p.s. I LOVE the house! I put a k27 7200 on my 88 turbo cab at it helped with both lag and HP. I assume your car doesn't have an intercooler so I'm not sure if this upgrade would be a good idea in your case. Call or go to Imagineauto.com for expert advice. I believe the owner is also a tech advisor for PCNA.

Thx for the comments. I'm not quite ready to lose the early tail -- as you might guess, I've debated this a lot in my head. I do have some restrictions (no pun intended) regarding CA smog checks which are now permanently in place for '76 and newer (ugh) -- which has probably saved me a lot of money ;-). The k27 7200 has been recommended by several -- I think I recall that it's not a bolt on change -- but I haven't found a pointer yet. Quote:

Brief update: spoke with Scott at Imagineauto today. His feeling was that the K27 7200 would be an upgrade without regard to the presence of an intercooler -- but he wanted to verify with Stephen -- so I'll hear back from them soon (apparently

It will take some creative plumbing to fit an IC under the decklid of a '76 turbo. IMHO, the early turbo decklids are the nicest of all the tails Porsche has done. There might be some threads on the subject with either Rennlist or Pelican from people who have been able to retain the deck and still implement an IC. Good luck!! Beautiful car(s), btw.
