Darryl,
I think that may be a later engine. It has been more than 35 years since I tinkered with them in my Formula Vee so I may be wrong. That looks like a hydraulic lifter. Do I remember the fan housing with the flat top introduced with the 1300/1500? Please correct me if I’m wrong. Best, Grady

Thanks for the positive feedback! I'm glad you guys can enjoy a benefit from my obsessive-compulsive disorder!
Hey Grady, that picture is scanned right out of my '63 beetle's owner's manual... here's the original engine in my car: ![]() Looks flat on the top to me! Todd, it's funny you should mention a 4-cam Carrera 1600! I've been practically begging to borrow a 4-cam repair manual from Denny Akers to get this scan: Now that would be a very cool animation... I hope I can get the raw scan without spending $50+ for a photocopy of the manual on eBay! Last edited by DarrylD; 02-24-2005 at 08:36 AM.. |

I've got the Repair Manual Darryl......if you'll teach me how to get the damn engine "running" as a screen saver.

Darryl,
That is my lame memory. I think the FVs used a 36 HP fan housing on that NEW 40 horse engine. That illustration appears to be a street Carrera 2 (587/1) with the rectangular cam covers, Solex and air filters. I’ll see what I can find for you in an original. I used to have all that stuff but gave it away or sold 15+ years ago. An animated 4-cam would be great. I told you what this was turning into. Good for you. Best, Grady

Cool! That engine is where I first learned to tinker with cars. I helped my dad tear one of those apart and put it back together on our kitchen table when I was about 8 or 9. He taught me the fine art of balancing pistons using a piece of all-thread and a coat hanger. That engine is still running in the Bug that sits in his garage. Actually, now that I think about it, it was a 1600 type 1 out of a 72, but close enough.
It looks like the VW engine is a non-interference engine, correct? What were the compression ratios like in those engines?

Hey Grady, I figured you thought it was a "stale air" heat 40hp, the early ones were.
Ok Eric, there are some PCs that have "issues" with big .gif file desktop backgrounds, even XP based ones. You must download it to be your desktop background by right-clicking your mouse over it and choosing the "Save Picture As..." option, then saving it somewhere on your PC. Making it your desktop background is done by right-clicking on the desktop, choosing "Properties" and the "Desktop" tab, then "Browse" to find the file you saved to your PC. Choose the "Center" option for best clarity. Eric, Grady or anybody else who could e-mail me a scanned bitmap of that Carrera engine (cut-away, front view, 2D) at about 1000x800 size, I'd get right on animating it. I got to see the real deal yesterday and know how it should work. |

That does it. Now I gotta build a bigger garage so I can replace my long gone 67 bug. It sure was cheap and easy to fix. And pretty fun at the time too.
Great job again Darryl.
