2.2E questions

Did 2.2E share many of the 2.2S engine parts?

Same crankshaft?
Same rods?
Same MFI pump and throttle bodies?

Info appreciated.
TIA

They're very similar, yet there are big differences. The crank is the same, but the rods are nitrited for strength. The pistons have a higher dome(and more piston relief) for more compression in the S. The head castings are the same, but the ports on the S are much larger (36mm vs 32). The throttle bodies are close, but again, the size of the throttle bodies and stacks are bigger on the S. The injection pump is timed to the cams, so it is different as well.

Also the cams are much different.

Blue,

The 2.2E uses the same fordged, counterbalanced crank as the S. The rods are the same, except that the S rods have the nitride coating for added strength. The ports in the E heads are 32mm intake and 32mm exhaust if I remember right, and the S heads have 36I 35E. Likewise, the inside bore of the MFI stacks and throttle bodies are larger for the S. The fuel pumps use different space cams to match their respective cam profiles. Of course the cams are different as well.

If you wanted to turn an E into an S you would need to port the heads, swap the cams, bore the MFI stacks and throttle bodies, and swap the E space cam in the MFI fuel pump for an S space cam.

I've heard it's not a DIY job. When I swap cams I'll probably have my pump sent out to have it recalibrated for the new cams.

wrong

The 2.2 911E and 911S cranks were counterbalanced and the 2.2T crank was not. The intake ports and exhaust ports were of a different size. Gus at Pacific Fuel injection will re-cam your injection pump for E or S specs.

How about the different aluminum alloy for the S head that was later used in the ’75 930 Turbo?

Best,
Grady
