Developped first oil leak today; help.

One of my brothers came to visit for the week end and we took the Porsche out this morning for about a 250Km run. It's been one of those sunny warm almost summer days (18deg C). It was just a great day to be out driving. Once I got the car back in the garage I noticed after about an hour or so that the car had "left it's mark" on the floor. This is the first leak. The back of the car has oil spatter all over it, the muffler is wet as are other parts.

I located the source as coming from a banjo bolt (as per my new PET CD rom, recently aquired from our host) which connects an oil pipe wich runs from the lower part of the engine block up into the engine compartment and onto another oil pipe near the pressure sending unit. Does anyone know what this oil pipe is for? It certainly does not appear to be a serious problem, but do I need to simply tighten up this bolt or do the sealing rings need to be replaced? I haven't even checked to see if it's loose. Any thoughts?

you can see the wet banjo bolt in the middle of this pic.

JUst R&R the part with new washers, whala! No more drips.

Took me about 20 inutes (ok maybe 45 with 2 cold ones during brakes)

I think parts cost about $25

OK I figured out what the oil pipe is for; it's Oil Pipe to Feed Carrera Pressure-Fed Tensioner, left, 911 (1984-89). This BBS and Pelican parts is a wealth of information which makes owning these cars not so daunting. I'll tighten up the bolt for starters and see it that cures it.

Oops, should have read Oil Pipe to Feed Carrera Pressure-Fed Tensioner, right, 911 Carrera (1984-89)

Thanks Jeep. If tightening doesn't do it then R&R will have to be the way.

Install all new parts. The lines fail either from vibration (hairline cracks), or they come apart on the crimp where the rubber meets the metal. It is highly unlikely that it leaks from the bolt / washer itself.

George, I'll take your advice. I just skimmed through the chain tensioner upgrade article and the failures you mentioned are indicated there as well. I guess tightening a bolt is wishfull thinking.

It's a small bolt - don't crank on it too hard, otherwise you will damage your cover, and that's a lot more expensive to replace. I would just replace the small sealing rings on either side of it.
