Porsche Crest Help!! I Think My Tranny Went Out. Not Sure

1977 911 3.0 W/ 915 TRANSMISSION. i WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND I DOWN SHIFTED TO 3RD AT ABOUT 45MPH. THE CAR ACCELERATED FORWARD FOR A SECOND THEN THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE AND THEN MY RPM'S JUST WENT UP. I TRIED ANOTHER GEAR THINKING IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN ISOLATED PROBLEM BUT IT WASN'T. EVERY GEAR I TRIED IT WAS THE SAME, INCLUDING REVERSE WHICH I CHECKED LATER.

AS I COASTED TO A SAFE SPOT TO GET OFF OF THE ROAD I COULD HERE A QUIET, ALMOST GRINDING SOUND COMING FROM THE REAR. THE CAR STARTS AND RUNS FINE, IT JUST WONT MOVE. I CAN PUT THE CAR INTO THE SELECTED GEAR BUT NOTHING HAPPENS.

IS THE LINKAGE BROKE, DIFFERENTIAL, WHOLE TRANSMISSION...?

How do your CV joints and axles look? Can you feel it going into gear, and does the clutch feel normal?

Hard to say what is wrong with the drive train. However, one thing is for sure, your caps lock key is stuck

They often times loosen up a short while after replacement and deserve frequent checking for a few hundred miles.

However, a loose axle usually doesn't occur with a "quiet...grinding sound." You may have lost a drive hub. Either way, the trans should come out and be inspected for metal debris and forensics. A lot of the time a tranny can be repaired using many existing parts if it was working well when it died.

start it, put it in gear, set the brake and let out the clutch, get out and look under the butt end and see if a CV joint is turning and the axle beyond it is not. a flashlight will help.

Thanks everyone. It turned out to be the bolts in the outer cv joint on the passenger side. I am ordering new bolts and a cv joint. Also one of the bolts broke and about 1/3 of it is still in there. Any tips on getting it out easy?

They aren't torqued down all that tight. Pair of vice grips should back the bolt right out. Hell even a set of pliers would probably do it.

Put a torque wench on all the other CV bolts and see if they are torqued properly. Are there Schnorr lock washers under the bolt heads? Some outboard stub axles have blind tapped threads for the CV bolts. Are the bolts the right length? If too long, they can bottom and not clamp the CV joint to the stub axle. Make sure you have the correct 12.9 internal hex bolts.

As Kurt said, the broken bolt should come out easily. If not, pay close attention to the bottoming in a blind hole issue.

Did that CV throw all the grease out or does it have an end-cap?

Report what you find. It might be a good idea to replace all the hardware.

Best,
Grady

I bought all new bolts and washers for both sides as I heard the washers are one time use only and I reused them.

I also was going to replace the cv boot, I have a new one sitting in my garage. It did through grease everywhere though.

The cv joint itself looks fine, I was planning on keeping that unless you think I should replace it for good measure.

What are your thoughts?
