Brake questions ???

Does anyone recommend or condemn CAD plating and hardening (new) Zimmermann cross-drilled vented rotors???
(Edit) - or do they come from the manufacturer already done? They DO appear to have a goldish plating already...

I've got a guy that does CAD plating for me. I have heard that is is a good idea with cross drilled rotors and was going to have it done if it's a smart thing.

Also, is anybody using brake cooling plates like our host sells??

Can anyone tell me what the width is between the 2 arrows?

Also, in replacing my rotors I've found that I have an "older" style of these plates, possibly home fabricated. The only difference is that mine don't have the tab-type cut-outs (see arrow on left), there's just a circle for the inner ring. I was wondering, why the cutouts?? It's supposed to force more air through the vents for more cooling...

Thanks!

Stock are not cad plated, but cad is a value added option from some vendors. I've used cad plated rotors on street cars, works great, but wouldn't on a race car.

I wouldn't drill the small rotors, slot if you must

I'm guessing you have the cooling kit that replaces the backing plate behind the rotor, hooked up to some kind of scoop?

The plates then make sure that once you have air in there that it goes through the rotor. Without the plates the air would go through the holes on the hub, not cooling much at all.

As long as your plates block air going through the hub they will work the same as the spendy ones.

Bill, I'm replacing my rotors right now and wanted to ask you about the plating. Is the advantage simply that the plated rotors won't rust on the edges? Doesn't the plating wear off on the faces of the rotor? And do you think zinc plating would work as well as cad plating (which is hard ot get here)? Thanks.

Yes, it's a cosmetic thing

Yes, but it doesn't matter, the pads will keep that area clean except in long term storage.

Yes, it does the same thing there are also zinc washes that work well.

a little bit more...

You're right, I meant to say that I had a cool brake kit.

Here's a couple of photos of my deflector plate w/ a rotor.

Note the "smaller" holes. Someone had manually drilled holes through the old rotors and used a small nut and bolt to affix them to the rotor instead of just using the big holes. I wasn't planning on drilling holes in the new rotors, what do you think??

Those plates were FILTHY by the way, but thanks to the miracle of a wire brush on a drill they're purty again... (not for long)

Oh yeah, and the car is auto-X'ed regularly and I plan to DE, but it's also a semi-daily driver, so I will probably go ahead and CAD the rotors, for rust prevention ....

Agreed, I wouldn't use the smaller holes.
