What to do, I NEED to go faster...

I finished up my '69 911S hotrod project a little over a year ago. Its a stock narrow body, fiberglass hood and bumpers and ducktail. I put in Corbeau GT8 seats, RS carpet kit, RS door panels. ALL the sound deadening and insulation was stripped out. The car is light, 2050lb wet.

It has full SRP track suspension with 22mm front and 28mm rear torsion bars, raised spindle bilsteins custom valved, SRP front and rear anti roll bars, Elephant racing mono balls front and rear, elephant bronze bushings, Sway-a-way adjustable spring plates, rear alloy control arms with monoballs, elephant front strut brace, turbo tie rods..... I am running 15x7 fuchs with Hoosier R3SO4's in 225/50R15 at all 4 corners.

The car has a Supertec built 2.6 MFI engine probably good for 225hp or so and I run a 901 trans. The car handles great and is fast. I rarely get pulled on the straights.

But after running 10 or so track weekends (including the last 3 in a row) I am starting to wonder....

I need more grip and I need more power. All the guys with the big fat rubber are pulling me coming out of the corners! They can also brake deeper. I am flogging the living crap out of this car and I can outrun many a car I shouldnt (like several ZO6 corvettes this past weekend) but several of my buddies with RSR bodies cars and big motors are leaving me behind and I HATE it.

So I have a delima. Do I modify the car more or wait until next winter and look for a bigger/badder racecar?

I would just build this car out, but it is a real "S" and so far nothing modified could not be put back stock. I have the original complete 2.0 MFI S engine and all the original S interior parts and stuff. It could be restored back to stock. But would anyone ever really do that? I seriously doubt I ever would.

So why not sell all the original S stuff and build this car out. Flare the fenders to 2.8RSR and get some built up 16x11 and 16x9 fuchs. Then strip out the rest of the weight in the car, install a cage and cell and go racing. I have a spare complete 2.4T engine with a 7R case and a complete MFI setup. I could build a 2.8 MFI twin plug RSR style motor ( 300hp??!!?? ) for it and the build would be a hoot.

I have been leaning toward running the car through this season of DE's and various instructing stuff with different clubs while I build a motor and then next winter doing the body modes and paint and stuff so I could race it next year. I would want to race in HSR vintage, PCA and NASA events.

Or.... should I keep this car as is and just buy a full racecar already built?

What do you guys think? Am I nuts to want to jump back into project mode again?

Terry,

If you get some aftermarket 17" rims you can fit 245/45/17 in the front and back.

Having said that do you have an LSD in the Gbox if not put in one of them and see how you go coming out o fthe corners.

Hey Man,
If you deside you want a 72 RSR with a 3.6 let me know I am building one to sell!

Keep the S and put a 2.0L race engine in it and come race with us in HSR Klubsport its a ball and has huge fields.
We race a 914-6 GT

There are two roads you can travel (arn't there always... )


Experience tells me you can pick up a well built car that someone has invested $40-50k in for probably half that price....

That being said...there is value in 'doing it yourself' if you have the funds and/or the patience.........

Ever hear a Ferrari 4.4 liter 4 cam V12 breathing through 6 weber carbs with velocity stacks and generating over 400hp sounds like as it winds through 7800rpm? Its not something I see ever getting sold!

But the 930 track car in the for sale section... thats sounding pretty sweet. If only he will take a Boxster in trade.

Don't even think of selling the Daytona; a GT3 can't even come close to the sound of that V12. Now if you could trade it for a NART 365GTB/4, that might be interesting. A yellow P4 non replica would be outrageous!

if I were in your shoes I think I would seriously look at returning you car to stock sell it and the go fast goodies. The way the market is lately you could finance yourself most of they way toward an RSR style car.

Wow, I'm surprised. At 2000lbs and with a 225hp 2.6 I'd think you shouldn't get passed that much, but if you are.... Have you ever heard of Jack Olsen and Black Beauty 2? Do a search. It's a '72 with a stock late model 3.6, and he doesn't get passed by Z06's or a whole lot else.

Hmmmmm I never said I was getting passed too much. In fact, I rarely get passed at all. This past weekend instructing for NASA the only cars in the instructor group that passed me were huge HP cars that could get me on the straight. I am passing lots of guys in ZO6s, M3s and other car.

I am not saying the driver cannot improve, all drivers can improve. But my laps times are consistent and I do have the car at the limits of its grip. I am smooth and I do a good job of maintaining momentum. The only way I am getting this car around the track at the current pace is by not letting it slow down! But a couple of my buddies are running a class or two up with fatter rubber and bigger motors and it would be fun to run with them.

If more power and bigger rubber didnt help with faster times, the factory would not have done the same thing and everyone would be racing 911R replicas.

I do really like this car. I would actually probably keep it regardless of what else I may get. I could take off some of the harsher performance stuff and with street tires it drivers great on the road.

That blue RSR does look pretty neat.

That is the real delima here. I am going racing. I will run PCA, HSR and NASA. I want to run a faster car and class. I know the first thing is to really look at all the rules and figure out exactly what class I will want to run in with each group. I will be doing that in depth over the next 6-8 months.

To further modify my current car, or to buy an already fully built racecar?

My current car has GREAT suspension. It does handle very well and I am happy with everything the guys at SRP helped me setup. The car is also light. All the nasty work of stripping out the gooey sound deadening and undercoating and tar is done. The interior is done. If I were to modify this car, I would install 2.8 RSR flares in the rear, glass RSR front fenders, RSR front splitter and probably glass doors, lexan, a full cage, fuel cell and other safty stuff. I have always wanted to build a hot porsche engine so I would do that myself using all the best parts. I figure all this further modification would cost me perhaps $25K if I do all the work myself.

Or.... convert this car back to street and keep it for fun and buy an already built and proven race car.

????

Sell your stock parts and build your car out. You'll never return it to stock, its too much work. Its fun to spend time building the car you want to drive but spending time to prep for a sale would be laborious at best. Not a leisure activity as it was stripping it down. Besides, even with the stock parts back in, you are still left with a car missing the factory sound proofing, undercoating, etc.

Your car sounds like a solid S car. Leave it alone and buy a car that is already built close to what you want.

There are not that many early S' around that are that nice especially in this part of the country
