who had the first ducktail and when?

I know the Paris show in the fall of '72s showed the original RS with the first ducktails. When were the first ducktails available on the production cars like the E, S and Ts?

Peter Gregg won some big races in the summer and early fall of '72 with no duck tail as did other factory "sponsored" drivers and no ducks to be seen in my reference material till early '73. Anyone know anything different?

Question? When was the first factory duck delivered and on what model car? Looking for speciifc months and year?

Yes, the end of '72 was when the "Ducktail" became available on the Carrera RS models, it was never offered officially on lesser models but a cottage industry soon developed making the fakes, which started showing up everywhere. The ducktail could also be purchased for considerably more cash from Porsche as an aftermarket part.

Thanks Bill. So it seems the factory road cars in '73/'74 were pretty rare with a duck on the COA. Anyone have an original price list for the price of the factory tail on special order with the car?

Finally how were the very first / early tails made?

In '73 only the Carrera RS had the duck, in '74 it was available on the lesser(cis engine) US Carrera as well, not many came that way, as the T&#220V issues which begat the rubber edged whales were in the air

There was a guy in high school we called 'Duck' Latusso because of his ducktail hairdo- That was in 1971, so he beat Porsche by 2 years on that.

Duck Latusso's kids probably wore mulletts in the mid 80's, but the first whale tail sorta looks like a mullett, especially the long RSR/934 version.

Business up front, party in the back!!!

Seriously, this is a good question.

Dane, I have a ducktail that should have never left the factory which I will cut and graph onto a steel decklid...why not have your body guy do that for you? Or is that not close enough for you?

Tryring to figure out what the ducks were made from in '72 and '73. The original STs were glass for the entire front fenders and steel rear weld on flares. Later on you could get steel ST flares front and back but just months later the RS/RSR and duck was available and shortly even bigger tails.

Just trying to nail down the details. Anyone have a COA for a early duck?

Several places on this board I've read the original ducktails were made from aluminum. Do a search for "aluminum ducktail;" more information might come up.

The first ductails were glass laid on an aluminum lid. Later ones were on steel.

I think once they were homologated, Porsche just started cranking out '73 RS's that were more like a street going car. No thin sheetmetal or glass, and all the amenities.

Thanks Tyson. That matches with my info as well.

Now anyone have a COA from PCNA that has a early duck listed?

Love to see a scan if so?

Dang........$15,000 just doesn't go very far these days:
http://www.mbhinc.com/html/1967_911s_targa.html

I think in Excellence or Panorama (current issues) they have one (67 targa soft rear window) for two of three times that price - but it's not this rough.
