At the behest of a friend and fellow Pelican, Mark Sides (who's both been the angel and devil over my shoulder though the whole process -- depending on time and circumstance), I've decided its time to introduce myself to the group at large here. I've been a reader of the board for a couple years now, but recently stepped up and jumped into Porsche-infested waters with both feet. I picked up a stock '79 SC with 150k miles about 10 weeks ago and promptly started a top end rebuild on the motor (though it ran great, there were 3 broken head studs).
Prior to acquiring the SC, my fun car was a '91 Mazda Miata that I (among other things) turbo charged and intercooled. I managed to get the car out to the track to do a number of DE events. Talk about highly addictive fun! But, back to the Porsche -- I've got the motor currently sitting under the car ready for the final install. I hope to get it up and running tomorrow. I did a number of "while your in there's" while fixing the head studs, including sending the heads off to Ted at German Precision (who in addition to doing spectacular work was absolutely wonderful to deal with) and the cams out to John Dougherty. I also powercoated a number of parts and cleaned things up all around. I've attached a photo of the motor ready to go back in. This group has been an immeasurable resource the entire way -- from making the decision to buy my first Porsche, to selecting the "right" car for me, on through the rebuild. I hope to have the car back on the road here before weeks end, but figured its about time I introduce myself. Thank you all for your help! T. ![]() |

Welcome to Pelican from a fellow long time lurker but newbie poster. Jumping in with both feet is the only way to go. I did it myself!
Its an unwritten rule that you must show some pictures of your new 911!

Thanks Mark. I thought someone might take me to task on not actually showing a pic of the car itself.

Hey, I Recognize that Motor!!!
It's about time you showed your arse around here!
The guys have been unusually polite so far - no one has given you grief about that Mazda-Blue color scheme you chose for that engine! And if they could only see that engine shroud - the horror.... I'm glad you finally posted and think you'll enjoy the comraderie of the board. Hopefully the next picture you post will be of a pegged (and not just momentarily bouncing!) tach upon reinstall! After the requisite break-in, of course. Welcome, fellow impoverished P-nut!

welcome, I am always envious of those who possess the skills to rebuild their motor. It looks awesome, lets see the finished project.

Welcome aboard. This is the best forum- of any marque- on the internet. Tightening up the top end and cams etc on a 150k bottom end is perhaps pushing your luck a bit. Not that what you've done is throwaway by any means, only that you might be in there again for bearings and rings. You can strip the robins egg blue off then. :-)

A Update -- and a few questions
Thanks to all for the warm welcome. As promised, I finally got the car moving and manged to snap a couple photos. Here's a pic of the car.
![]() I haven't done much to the outside other than a quick wash and I did take the wheels off and polish up the wheels and painted up the calipers. I won't be putting Al Reed out of business anytime soon. It was a ton of work and I'll probably touch them up next time I replace the rubber. Nonetheless, I learned a ton about how to polish metal. I swapped out the mix-matched tires the car came with with a fresh set of Toyo T1-S'. The motor runs great. I'm not sure if its the headwork that I had done or the addition of the 964 cams, but it goes like stink. Very responsive and potent. Much improved over how it ran previously. I had to work out a few kinks with the CIS. Had a couple hoses plugged in the wrong places. But, no runs strong and idles smooth. Couple questions for those who may have suggestions. Off the bottom of the decel valve, the hose comes off and splits to the right and left. I don't know where the hose to the right (going out toward the drivers side goes? I cannot seem to locate any open nipple/port that it needs to connect to. Does anyone have a suggestion or can take a quick look (maybe photos) at their 78/79 SC to see what this hooks to? I've searched and looked at the diagrams, but they don't seem to show the split. Second, can't seem to locate the vacuum hose for the assist for the brakes. I have trace in down the tunnel from the front and to the firewall, but can seem to locate where it is in the engine bay. So, for the time being I don't have power assist with the brakes. I think I know where it plugs into, but can't seem to locate the hose out the firewall. These questions aside, I'm having a complete ball with Porsche ownership. Lots more projects to tackle (I see a DIY repaint in my future), but I'm looking forward to it. I'm sure with the help of this board, there's not much that can't be done. Tracy |

Welcome TWork! Shingle Springs!?! Wow. Small world. I am in Cameron Park. There is another Petrol Blue 911 I see running around town often, but it's a Carrera with black center wheels. Nice work on the engine! I'll keep my eyes out for you. I'm usually in my '80 SC, Platinum.
