Need help installing alternator
Hello,
After deciding that the squeaking from my 79SC engine was a bad alternator bearing, I decided to replace it with a rebuilt version which is all I can afford right now. Interestingly, I found that the alternator in the car was a rebuilt Marchal, not original equipment. Not sure how many miles it had on it. Anyway, the "new" Rhone rebuilt alternator has less terminals than the old one: ![]() My wiring before was as follows: Terminal Wire B+ .... Red wire with boot +61 .... Blue wire with boot D- .... Fat black wire second D- .... 3 red wires DF .... Thin black w/ quick connect I'm not sure how to get these 5 wires on the new Rhone with only 3 terminals that have no markings on them at all. The Rhone does have "Porsche" written on it with 911 603 120 04 J so I'm hoping it is compatible. Can anybody help? Thanks! |

My assumption is, your "new" alternator has an internal regulator as opposed to the external regulator used with your old alternator. Sorry, I can't tell you which wires get connected (or where), but you'll be eliminating your external voltage regulator and a couple of wires that attach to it. A search will probably give you the above information. You may also have to wire a resistor in parallel with the alternator light on the dash (one of the reasons I had my original rebuilt rather than "upgrade" to the newer style).

Thanks everyone.
I don't know what I would do without this board. Martin

Just be careful still....
The tech articles are correct ...as to which wire gets connected to which post.... I seem to recall, however, that some applications position the alternator in the fan shroud so that the 12 o'clock position ( as seen on the backside of the alternator per the Tech Bulletin) might be at 6 o'clock ...as installed. If so, don't fret....follow the wiring pin-outs of the tech article but note that the "clock" may be rotated 180 degrees...adjust your thinking accordingly. If not...and it goes in as shown...well....good for you !!! - Wil
