Make your own engine stand from a bad tranny?
I just finished a 901 tranny rebuild and have a bad Mg case. There is a hole in the bottom of the diff housing from the case sitting in some sort of caustic material. At least the internals were in excellent shape and became good donors for the rebuild.
Now I am left with this case which was going to go in the recycling bin (metal recycling center). Has anyone cut the bell housing off, and bolted it to an engine stand thus allowing a 911 case to bolt up? It would be easy to relieve areas for access to the flywheel. Watch out, I have a sawzall and am not afraid to use it... I will report back in a few hours with the results.

That did not take long. A pictorial...
The donor patient. yes, the case is corroded and has a hole in it. you could stick your finger in and touch the ring gear when the diff cover was in place. I wonder how that stud is still there. Its about to fall out. First get out the saw and plug it in. Plan the route of attack... Start cutting. First the driver's side... Then the passenger side... Makin' chips YEAH!!! freshly cut magnesium. HMMM Shiney!! Ready for the recycler. Drill a few holes, push through some bolts/nuts/washers. Almost done. Next step is to relieve the bell housing to support one half of the cse and make it easier to bolt the pass side in place. the case is out for cleaning. That will have to wait. Oh yeah, I will be installing a few more fixing bolts. 3 is not enough but my parts bin ran out... I wonder if that stud is long enough to fit here. ![]() Total cost.. Nada!! Oh yeah, $29 for an engine support stand, originally bought for my tranny rebuild.

A little harder to get to the flywheel bolts.
Can't be as strong as the one you buy. Might work. Thanks for the pictures. |

Now you take the center section and trim off the remaining differential parts. Carefully cut a “window” so you can have access to the shift forks and bolts. Now you have a “better than P-260” tool for adjusting the 2-3 & 4-5 shift forks.
Best, Grady
