3.6 conversion belt minder?

Is everyone that has a 3.6 conversion using the belt minder? Mine squeaks occassionally and getting tired or removing and oiling it. Since I don't have it hooked up to the dash light, is it okay to remove it all together? I know the sensor is routed to the DME so I don't know if it will cause any problems.

Another reason to go to single pulley/belt is to get rid of the belt minder.

Here's a gratuitous photo of my engine. With single belt pulley.. sans belt minder. Dan

Is that the little pulley that lets you know when the belt breaks?

I have it.

Beware the broken belt switch!

I removed the one on my vram after I noticed it was stuck and wouldn't trip if the belt broke. There's a plastic ramp inside the switch housing that holds the switch contacts open when the belt is in place against the little wheelie doodad. Unfortunately the switch contact is metal and the ramp is plastic. Engine vibration caused the switch detante to wear a groove in the ramp so that when the belt was moved away from the wheel on the switch, it wouldn't trip. The groove worn in the ramp wouldn't let the spring loaded contact switch close. Don't know how common this might be but if your waiting for that broken belt indicator to come on while your engines burns down---------- HUGE BUMMER! Check your switch or go to single belt conversion. Simple install.

Thanks for the info guys. Jack - it is the little pulley and Dan your motor looks sweet! I'll have to wait until I drop the motor next time to switch to the single pulley- I should have done it in the first place. I spent most of the weekend wiring up a check engine light and putting in an OBD II connector like Moses has on his set up. The check engine light works and I am going to borrow a friends scanner this week to see if I can pull up codes. I thought it was going to be a real pain to do but it was pretty straight forward.

code7rpd - I would love to know your source for the OBD connector and the wiring associated with it!
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,
This thread shows the pinouts

How to use an OBDII diagnostic port in a 3.6 transplant.

I sourced the connector from LA Porche Dismantler - there site is

http://www.911pcar.com/

The wiring is pretty straight forward. The DMW pinouts are on this thread:

993 Diagnostic Socket to OBDII pinout...

The beauty of the setup is that all the wiring you have to tap into is in the 14 pin connector off the DME harness. This 14 pin connector is where your tach signal and power for the DME relay come from. All of the wires for the OBD connection come into the 14 pin connector but do not come out. You will need a multimeter to check for continuity on the DME plug end and the wires in the plug. The following are the wire colors associated with the appropriate OBD plug:
Pin 55 for the K lead is orange/white
Pin 6 for engine speed is blk/violet - you tie it in to the tach signal wire - mine was purple
Knock control for pin 50 is yellow

The check engine light wire on pin 21 is Green/grey (provides a ground in the event it is tripped). You will have to get some of the female pins for the 14 point connector and just attach to the corresponding pinouts to the OBD plug.
L lead for pin 13 is orange/black

I knew should have taken a better pic, the colored wire goes to the connector under discussion. I wonder if a US '95 can be used on a ROW '97

code7rpd. No need to drop the engine to change the pulley!! The crank pulley remains unchanged. You swap out the alternator/ fan pulley.Dan

Thanks Dan - That looks like it will be the next project!

Bill - that's the right connector. Most of the female pins are unused and are the wires that are needed for the the OBD port.

I called them to place the order and they charged me $150 plus shipping. I think the total cost was $176. The other option is to find two OBD plugs from any other car. You can them remove pins from one and plug them into the other. I bought an OBD plug for a VW for $10 a while back. The only reason that I ordered the 993 plug was to take a look at it to make sure that the pin outs I had were consistent with the plug and to compare the colors of the wires to those in the DME harness. Knowing what I know now I would have gone the cheaper route.

code - thanks very much for the details. I'll see about sourcing the ODB socket from some "non-porsche" sources to save $$$$. I'll let the group know of any sucess I might have.

Well, I took my car to a friend's shop and he used a generic scanner made by a compnay called EASE. It did not work. I double checked my wiring and found thta it was hooked up properly and it was. I took the car to an independant Porsche shop and they used a Bosch Hammer and it worked. It linked up and provided a good signal. So, I went back to my friend to tell him the news and he then called EASE tofind out about compatability. EASE told him to download updated software and after doing so, it still didn't work. They ultimately told my friend that if the underhood sticker reads E OBD II then it can only be scanned by the dealer. My engine is a 993 Euro motor so does anyone know if there is a generic scanner that will work? Does anyone know what E OBD II is?
Thanks.

Well, at least we know the wiring is good, you should be commended for that!

Good job.
