Cool My first DIY & and an upgrade to boot!

Whoo hoo! Well I did my first major DIY yesterday with the help of a buddy - installing turbo tie rods on my 86 Carrerra. The old original tie rod end boots were torn and so I figured what the heck as long as I'm at it...............

All in all it went pretty well, although we found that removing the old tie rods was a bit of a pain. Others on this site have recommended angling the tie rod and using it to unscrew itself from the rack but we found that with the way the rack is recessed into the floor pan and the location of the stabilizer bar you can't get enough of an angle to unscrew it. So we disassembled the yoke, stuck an allen wrench through the hole in the part the yoke attaches to and screwed it out with a wrench. A little tedious but it worked.

On the install even with the thin wrench there just wasn't enough space to turn it to screw the tie rod back into the the steering rack again with way the rack is recessed into the pan. Thank god for vice grips.

Altogether, including time to debate the above dilemmas, it took about 3 hours and 6 beers between the two of us from start to finish. Not bad for newbie

Now I have a question. Alignment. Can this be done by any competent repair shop or should I go to someone who specializes in Porches?

Garage
Good reference info for an upcoming project.
I will defer to the more experienced on the question of alignment.

Post a request here and I am sure that someone will give you a recommendation for a shop that knows Porsche alignment in your area. Your average tire store doesn't see enough P cars in my humble opinion.
