How to get to back up switch

My reverse lights aren't working. The bulbs look good, the fuses are fine, so I'm thinking I need to replace the back up switch. When I've done a quick look under the car, I can't find it. Based on pictures and parts diagrams I know where it's supposed to be, but the transmission carrier seems to be in the way.



Do I have to remove the transmission carrier to get to the back up switch? Or do I just need to get the car raised up higher to get a better angle to look for it.

Also, after I find it, I think I've read that I can disconnect the wires and touch them together - this will light the reverse lights and tell you the back up switch is defective. Is this correct?

You don't need to remove the tranny mount. You will see the boot over the wires leading to the switch when you are under that area. Pull the boot back and use a pair of needle nose piles to extract tthe bullet connectors. And yes, the touching the connectors should light the reverse lights. The switch is a contact switch...

And I do believe you are correct in your assumption that touching the two wire terminals together will cause the lights to light.

Does anyone know what type of electrical connector porsche used for the reverse light connection on the 915 transmission? (In the picture above) Mine had been cut off. I tried to replace them with the bulletstyle electrical connector but they are a little small so they just pull back out.

Yeah those male member shaped pins are a pain to get. Basically have to salvage a wire harness... or make new ones. FYI I replaced my switch and still had trouble with reverse lights... turned out the pin in the shift shaft had been moved during the last rebuild and was missing the switch... noticed it right before I put the nose cone on after another rebuild.

My reversing lights stopped working and after a long search it turned out the wires had worked themselves out. Pushed them in and job done. Its never normally that easy

So there is no standard bullet connector tha twill fit in there. I saw something on the internet about Japanese bullet connects which kind of looked like the right shape.

You can use regular bullet type ends for the application if you apply solder (melt some on) after you crimp the end on the wire.
What you are trying to do is increase the diameter of the connector.
If you get the correct amount on, it will be a force fit into the receptacle.
