Big sigh .... what a fantastic looking color........happy motoring when you get it on the road

Rick Lee 05-06-2005 06:01 AM

Oh, that color rocks! I toured the Kramer Guitar factory when I was 15 and they were just starting to use flip flop red and blue on guitars. I got one of each eventually. Such an awesome paint style. It will look different in every sort of light.

JTL 05-06-2005 06:05 AM

Sweet - I always liked that color.

Eric Mckenna 05-06-2005 06:05 AM

This car is almost finished. Mark and I talked about it yesterday in the paint booth and we couldn't find anything he would have done differently. (other than the original price quote ;) ) That was good since I had asked him that same question every week now for 4 months. You know it is bad when they are offering to add heat to Pole Position seats. Not touching this car again. I am however looking for a roller. Just in case Iback into insanity. Next one is going to be all fiberglass and break 2000#s. After all I have to put that 3.4 somewhere safe ;)

I was originally going to use a Porsche color code, Zenith Blue, but in the end I picked my own color from the Glasurit color chart.
Jet Blue, Minerva Blue and Zenith Blue are also close in color.
Zenith blue is the closest.

Paint was such a tough decision. My car's mods not being a replica of any one model gave me the freedom to think a little more "out of the box". Even at the last minute as they were mixing the paint I was thinking it was a big of mistake! Guess the real point is almost any color works on these cars. Porsche proved that over and over again in the '70s. In the end I just wanted a color I liked. Until it was actually on the car I was still undecided. Thankfully, I am more than pleased with the end results.

Funny story on that one EW. Mark was going to cut the hood for a center fill the first day the fuel cell showed. I wanted a "street rod" with as much room in the front trunk as possible so a center fill wasn't going to help. With the shaved theme on the car I also wanted the exterior as clean as possible.

So you weren't the only one who thought me nuts to leave off the center fill ;)

Plans keep getting pushed back Eric but I am thinking of tagging the cross country NY run on to the SF gathering. So you had better be there!

Gavin English 05-06-2005 08:25 AM

Dane,

This is an awkward question......How much did a paint job like that cost. (materials and labor)

I am going to have my 911 painted and I have no idea what the price of a great paint job costs. I want the job done to a high standard. (like your car)

If you want to send me an instant message, that is fine.

Thanks,
Gavin

mjshira 05-06-2005 08:28 AM

my paint cost 8k and that was in southern Indiana....

They say you get what you pay for!

I really need to get my car painted but with the price of paintwork in Germany my car will have to wait a couple more years.
I do have an account set aside for just that so all is not lost.

mjshira 05-06-2005 10:50 AM

it was worth it, every penny, you can find the thread with the pics in it if you search. we took the car down to metal.

don911 05-06-2005 11:05 AM

$8K seems like a great deal. I've been quoted twice that for a complete respray a couple years ago. It was a down to the metal job so that was part of the reason for the high cost.

rdane 05-06-2005 11:17 AM

I agree, worth every penny and then some. Hard to believe it is really my car now. My original idea was a few small body shop projects and a respray. $20K for a bare metal paint job from a reputable shop is not out of line. (which includes new seals, redone trim, disassembly, dropping the engine, pulling the wiring up front, several miles of sand paper, masking tape and masking paper ect ) Unbelievable amount of time and effort is put into these cars if the paint is done right.

When we figured out my car already had something like 3 or 4 resprays in the last 25 years it was time to go back to bare metal and start again. That gave me the idea of adding a few body work projects that I never thought I'd have the opportunity to do on this car.

By the time we were done with the body work the entire car was back to bare metal. Then it was time for a color change. Not the best planning time wise but it worked out in the end.

The most important part of my project was having a shop and owner like Mark at Eurotech to follow through and deliver an outstanding finished project. No bs about that. Most shops would have stopped long ago and delivered the project...."unfinished".

Painting can be the ultimate "while you're in there" fun project!

At some point I decided to build "my" car. The bare metal gave me all the excuse I needed.

Dane the car looks amazing! It will certainly serve as an inspiration to a lot of us.

randywebb 05-06-2005 12:24 PM

So that is "just" a standard Glassurit color? It has nothing added to it to get that pearly lustre?

Glasurit color right off the standard metallic cards (most of them have pearl or aluminum or both in them) and several months of prep work and miles of sand paper. Trust me, I have a big panel (4'x6') here for a color sample...with no prep work, not even close to the real thing you are seeing here.

Dane,

Dane,

I think I'll have to stop by Eurotech on the way home tonight just to drool. (Don't worry, I carry my own drool cup.)

- I hereby grant you permission to drive in Oregon (to conflate this thread with the speeding one).

jmz 05-06-2005 08:00 PM

looks like it's all downwind from here.

looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Very, very nice...... Love the color.

jeffgrant 05-06-2005 09:11 PM

Dane-

That is AMAZING. I really do hope you get it ready for the 15th, as that would definitely be one of the high points of the trip down from Vancouver.

I'm also sure that the pics don't do it justice!

...jeff

rdane 05-06-2005 10:41 PM

Thanks Jeffs....I am hoping but wouldn't put money on it for the 15th. Too close to do it half a$$ now ;)

air-cool-me 05-06-2005 11:30 PM

you are going to need a rope around that car to keep people from melting into that paint job...

gives hopes to all those SC's!

efhughes3 05-07-2005 04:59 AM

(the rears flares look just right: not too much, not too little)

rdane 05-07-2005 06:12 AM

Thanks Ed, right on. Funny how most are drawn only to the front flares. The rear flares got the same hammer and dolly treatment and are even bigger in size comparison to the original SC flare.

These are Greg Hnat's new 265/225 Victor Racers on 8 and 9" 16s being used for a test fitment before being shipped off. (honest Greg I haven't forgotten you) Even with an engine's weight back there we'll have all kinds of room under these fenders.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115474744.jpg

These are 225/50/15 SO3s on 8" Fuchs with a 1/2 spacer.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115441475.jpg

Shuie 05-07-2005 06:21 AM

The profile of the flares is incredible. The details on this car boggle the mind. Absolutely amazing 911. Done right.

mjshira 05-07-2005 06:25 AM

these cars do cost a ton, especially when you have to undue someones mistakes like in the case of the resprays on this car. lucky for me, I got a car from someone who did things right, more than right. that allowed me to get away with less money on my paint job and there was not a lot of body work (no need to correct errors) that others deal with. finding someone who takes his time with the prep work is rare indeed...

rdane 05-07-2005 06:38 AM

James point well taken.

Not many of the cars at 25 or 30 years old that still look good haven't been resprayed. Not a mistake to respray them. The mistake is doing too many resprays. At some point you need to start over again with bare metal to do it right. I was at that cross roads with this 200K mile car.

The car was straight, my body work was all optional. Fun to build the car your imagination dreams up. There are lots of cheap SCs out there in similar condition that would make great project cars to start with.

ghnat 05-07-2005 07:51 AM

Dane,
Do not sweat it. Like I said, I am in no hurry for the wheels and tires.
Keep making progress and posting pics. It gives me fuel for working on mine!

Tooth911 05-07-2005 08:11 AM

Dane its great to see the progress its going to be so cool to hook up agian in the near future. On another note where you planning on headin south for Jacks North meets South trip? .see you soon Chuck.

RANDY P 05-07-2005 09:31 AM

Uh, this has gone beyond comprehension...

Nice, very, very nice.

rjp

efhughes3 05-07-2005 10:24 AM

Dane: In looking at that last rear pic, what are you going to do with the rear "sheet metal"-if it's metal at all? Curious as to how you'll match the custom profile.

Can't wait to see her in Sioux Falls in September. Although, I should probably fly up and rent a car, as mine's going to be put to shame;)

BTW-the color takes on ANOTHER hue in that one, a purple tint this time.

rdane 05-07-2005 12:33 PM

Nice try Ed, since you have one of the niciest ducks in Texas ;)

The bumpers are both glass. I started with my old narrow body CRT rear bumper and a new narrow body IROC bumper in front. Both were cut and spliced to fit the new flairs. I was a little surprised at just how easily the guys at Eurotech made it all look.

The rear with the first coat of glass on the filler piece.

This is Sang working on the front after having just cut off the bumper end and clamping it back in place to glass in.

rdane 05-07-2005 06:32 PM

But how else will I test these Craig?
