79 SC runs rough
It acts as if one cylinder isn't firing. I pulled the air cleaner off, turned the ignition to on pushed the flapper valve for a few seconds. Heard it squeal. Did this several times. Still didn't help.
Tailpipe sooty.

How I find a one cylinder miss is to use an inductive timing light and check all the plug wires for a spark. If the plug isn't firing or maybe fouled, it won't trigger the light. Not grounding, no spark, etc. I check them all at idle and throughout the rpm range.
If you find one cylinder that is missing spark, then you can check your plugs, your wires, the dizzy stuff, etc. If you dont, then maybe check your fuel system. Just a very quick and basic place to start.

Buy a pair of insulated spark plug wire pliers and pull each spark plug wire from the distributor until you find a cylinder were pulling the wire doesn't change the rpm of the engine. That the dead cylinder. Unless you feel like getting shock, the insulated pliers are a good investment. I keep mine in the glove compartment.
The timing light may work, but if you have a bad injector, the spark plug will still fire. My was a bad injector. |

Pull your plugs. The plug/s that come out black is it.
How old are your ignition cables? Joe Redwood PCA since 1976 |
