yes, I also recieved nothing from VW world, and ended up ordering the moon plates from Lou's Unlimited. Lou's Unlimited, Inc. - VW and Dune Buggy Parts & Accessories . I am going to call VISA and ensure I wasn't charged. I had the same issue with VWBug World. No response to multiple calls and emails. And no product.

Got my half shafts out of the box today (from Pelican). They appear to have different CV's on each one!! Contacted Pelican customer service and emailed them these photos:
![]() ![]() ![]() Can anyone identify why they would be different?? The thinner joint with no seal on it looks most like the ones I took off the car, but neither are a perfect match.

Mine were the same thickness but one is easy to move and the other one is very thigh.
Call PP and they said that tightness is not a problem.

Nick, it looks from the picture that the CV's are reversed.. not what you expect necessarily.... but check out the groove in the CV.... the side that has the groove in it has the gasket... you could flip the CV with the groove away from the Tranny if you wanted to...

Another example of bad CV surfaces
Clean the grease and check thoroughly! These will need replacing.

Thick Flange
I'll share these pictures of the thick steel flanges.
The flanges on my 76 Carrera 3.0 appear to similar to the Turbo flanges with the bumps. These are thick and might explain why they don't require the half moon bits. I'd like to try and source these rather than the type that require all the extra hardware and clamps. The boot appears to have been attached during the manufacturing process by way of pressing either an insert (the rounded bit) or the metal as an extension of the flange itself. I wont be able to tell until I remove the old CV from the axle. Anyone know if the boot is serviceable or if it requires a new flange / boot assembly? ![]() ![]() ![]() |

bump...
It's from a 76 Carrera 3.0 Targa. Anyone know where I can find the same flange/boot pair not requiring schoor washers and clamps to hold the boot to the flange? ClickClickBoom - in at the same time ... what a coincidence! Thanks for the bump. |

Since you will be using aftermarket parts, this will require a little commitment to determine the correct bolt length. Read the entire thread, carefully, if the bolts back out you could potentially have a catastrophic event. Listen to Grady, he knows much. Is it really worth totaling your car for the lack of a few washers? I assembled my right CV using pelican CVs, boots and gaskets, 12.9 bolts listed in this thread, and Nord Lock washers, the Nord Lock washers were about 10 cents each, Schnoors are about the same. Get a several sizes of bolts, some washers and get er done. My left CV is on the short list now that the temperatures are coming up and I work outdoors on a covered concrete slab.

You could use bacon grease, the key is making sure that it stays in the joint/boot area, so yes.

you need an EP lube, so bacon grease won't cut it

Same part numbers, one with grove and cork gaskets at both end and the other one fully machine, no groove for and no cork gaskets. In addition, the flanges of the corked one are ~3mm thicker (wrong info removed). Off course as luck would have it, I installed the machine one first and since the one that came off had no cork, I did not make anything of it. As I installed the second one, I noticed the cork on both side... Nickshu What was the answer from PP?

Pelican contacted Loebro, who said both styles would work on my 911 but the version with the cork seal is the preferred one as it's a higher quality joint.
Loebro drop shipped me an extra cork seal CV shaft. Pelican took back the non-cork seal shaft (shipped at their expense). It all worked out but the whole thing took about a month to resolve. The bolts were an issue too. I went thru three different sizes before I found ones that fit well. The cork-seal joints are thicker than the non seal joints so the bolts that come with it are a bit short (they will work, but I didn't like them being so short). Ended up going with M8x50mm bolts with Schnorr washers and Moon plates. If you are not doing moon plates than M8x45 is the best choice. I tried M8x45mm, M8x50mm, and M8x55mm before settling on the 50mm length. This one fit flush on the opposite end of the flange when torqued in place. Again this was with moon plates so if you are not doing those then use 45mm with the cork seal joints. I got my bolts from BelMetric.

Thanks Nick,
I'll contact PP and hopefully will end-up with 2 corked one. The flange on the corked one are ~3mm ticker so the original stud that came with it should not be used despited the warning to use them... JJ
