Just a few pictures of the new FG Ducktail installed. The overall fit could have been better, but I am generally pleased. BTW - It is close to 25lbs lighter than the stock Carrera whale tail. I even made my own latch assembly from aluminum stock by reverse engineering the original pieces. Dan

Dumb question: does the ducktail use the stock engine grill?

Nice looking car with or without the duck. Do you know who made the tail and what color was it before the tail was prepped and painted. There has been some discussion as to who makes most of the tails out there and sells them wholesale. Some fit a lot better than others. Thanks, Chuck

I gotta say, the tail looks good. I like it on pretty much any 911. I saw a RUF 996 that had a ducktail type decklid on it, and I liked it.

I recently saw an original Carrera with a duck tail, and I was surprised by the fit and finish, plainly stated, it was rough. I asked the owner about it, he said the factory knew what the purpose of the car was, and when they made the duck out of a standard engine lid, the fiberglass guy they used was, shall we say, less than perfect in his layups. I suspect that most ducks made today are superior in looks to the original by some level, more by some than others; but since most of us want a fit similar to or exactly like the stock lid, we're demanding more than Porsche did 30 years ago. That's, over all, not a bad thing.

dan, i'm curious about your exhaust..forgive my ignorance, but is it what they refer to as a 'restricted exhaust'? is it for sound? if it gives the car a deeper sound, can this mod be performed to a '74 with the stock (very nice) exhaust? i love the throaty sound..but with a cis car do you our anyone else know of simple mods that can be done to increase this? ryan

Those appear to be SuperTrapp™ mufflers. If so, they have removable plates or discs that can vary the sound emitted. They've pretty much always been very controversial at to whether they work as advertised. That is to say, you remove (if memory serves) plates to reduce sound, but removing plates reduces flow. The controversy came in when you have removed enough plates to not annoy the cops , does your engine produce the same power it would if you had a well engineered, but more conventional exhaust system. Personally, I can't say. I've never installed them, and have never run tests on a car with them installed.
