Broken Tatga top fixed pin

One of the pins on my targa top has broken.. Can they be replaced or mended? Anyone else had to do this?

Of course I mean one of the two pins that insert into the targa bar before locking down the front cams.

my targa is a little rough itself, so i've ghosted through some of the parts here on the host site. i'm almost positive you can order a new pin here on pelican. i don't think it would be that difficult to put a new one in, either.

The parts you need are:
c-012-241-1, 1974-85 fixing bolt
n-012-241-1, 1974-85 spring washer
a-565-203-40, 1974-85 Alignment plate

These are for the front pins, hope that's what you need

I need to replace mine as well but have put it off as I have been told you have to remove the top covering to get at the threaded plate.

5 minutes into my targa top recover I broke both, yes both, of my fixing bolts. I know the parts to buy but how the heck do you get at it? I have removed the skin and can see it but it appears to be under some molded metal. Anyone done this?

I had heard that you have to punch/grind the rivets out, replace and re-rivet... I have one of my pins broken and haven't attempted the repair... Please update this thread with your progress... If possible, take some pics also....

I took the easy way out. My right hand pin was located in the ashtray when I bought my Targa. Turned out the female thread was stripped. I cheated and used epoxy putty. So far, so good.

The pins are rather soft aluminum, so, if you can get all of the remainder of the pin threads out [M10 x 1.00] and chase the threads in the plate ... you may not have to replace the plate.

ps ...

The replacement pin(s) you receive may be longer than the one currently in your top ... later superceded part numbers are longer and slightly different profile from the early '70s part.

What does "chase the threads in the plate" mean. The bolts themselves broke in the plate. How would I get them out? Drill?

I spent about $25 getting misc pins and clips for my targa top... it's all pretty easy work - the hard part is figuring out which part you need from the diagrams - call the guys at Pelican and the'll help you figure out what you need, though.

The only thing I needed other than a pair of pliers and couple of screwdrivers was a set ot retaining clip pliers ($10 - sears).

You can always take pics and post them here - the best thing about this board is that just about anything has been done (or thought of) before and you can get great info (or cautionary tales!)

There are a number of ways to get the broken pin out of the plate without damaging the threads. Drilling with a 1/8" bit after center-punching is one way ... along with a few drops of 9% pickling vinegar or muriatic [HCl -- hydrochloric acid] acid to dissolve away corrosion in the threads. After the drilling to progressively larger bits up to 1/4" ... a screw extractor should be able to get the pin out.

If it is necessary to drill all the way until only threaded fragments of the pin are left ... then a dental pick or similar tool will probably be needed to get all of the thread fragments out of the plate threads. Any stubborn/stuck fragments can be dissolved with muriatic acid ... if need be.

After removal is when the 'thread chasing' takes place ... consisting of running a satndard DIN 8.8 property class M10 x 1.00 [extra fine thread -- but reasonably easy to find] bolt fully into plate threads to assure no binding. If shards still remain in the plate threads ... it may be necessary to run an M10 x 1.00 tap through the threads, but don't be tempted to just screw the pin in if a standard bolt still binds!

S_Man. If the plates need to be replaced does one have to remove rivets or just cut into the top covering? In my case that is not a problem as I plan to get it recovered.

The pins I'm trying to get our just are not budging and in the process I am destroying the plates they screw into. Where do I insert the new plates I bought? Is there access from the backside? I hope not because I already glued the replacement vinyl on . Maybe I'll cut a hole and refill it with JB Weld.
