Cool I finally got it!!

Well, I finally got my car. Unfortunately, I found the car before I found the Pelicans. No PPI – therefore, I’m not really sure what’s wrong with the car, if anything at all. If advised, I may go ahead and get a “Post Purchase Inspection” just to know what’s up. Anyway, I bought the car from a dealer (pawn shop), and it did actually pass smog, but later on I found out it took 3 tries to pass, so I’m not sure what all they did to it to make it pass. Flew to L.A. to pick up the car and drove it back up to the Bay Area with no real problems – it ran a little hot in the mountains, but no big deal.

Ok – Here’s what I know about the car. It is a 1978 911SC, with 152K miles. Not sure if there was ever a rebuild. No Air Conditioner, it was removed – which the dealer told me about. Evidently no heater either, but I didn’t discover that until after I bought Bentley’s and 101 Projects and really started poking around in the engine compartment. I haven’t found any rust at all, the paint looks good, and the interior is excellent. No cracks in seats or dash. Speedo seems to be reporting faster than I’m going, and the clock is not working, but those will be sent to North Hollywood Speedo for repair. The shifting is a little clunky, which I understand is typical, but I have ordered new bushings and the short shift kit. The main thing that concerns me is that the car doesn’t seem to have much pep – but I’ve never driven another, so I’m not sure what to expect. I’ve adjusted the idle because it was only at about 500, and I adjusted the mixture to make it a little richer, and now the backfiring is pretty much gone. I also pulled one of the plugs (I haven’t gotten around to all of them yet), and it looked perfect. In any case, I’ve ordered the standard tune-up items... new spark plugs, new distributor cap and rotor, and plan on checking the valves as well. I can’t believe how much I’ve learned in the short time I’ve been obsessed, but any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Also I’ll attach more pics tonight.

Brian

Welcome from another newbie !

The car looks very nice. I did like you, read up on everything I could get my hands on, was utterly prepared for the buy, and then went on to pick up the first I saw, no PPI no nothing. Just fell in love.

Well beginners luck I guess, cause everything seems to work so far. Hope that goes for your car too. This forum is the best.

Cheers,

Hi

Your car looks good, I just bought a 79 ROW SC, with some update's, just getting into it as well.

The PO took off the heat, I dont think my car ever had A/C mine has crank up windows I guess most of the Euro cars had them?

sweet!

if you need a post p. i., talk to john at valhalla, in layfayette. he is great! in the beginning, he did some stuff i was not comfy to DIY. he gave me a checklist of stuff i could DIY. i stuck that list on my fridge in the garage, and did them all, checking them off as i went. i took it back to him for a quick and free "once over" so he could check my handiwork. i passed.

i live up the street in concord, so if you need any help...
plus you need to come on one of our spirited "tune up" drives.
